Does anyone on the list live in a dome home or know someone who does? I am interested in finding out how they like this type of home and the advantages and disadvantages of dome homes.

Domes have always been fun to think about living in. They feel spacious, but have difficult acoustics, and can be difficult for some people to live in. It is more a love-hate thing. There is still debate whether they are more efficient on materials when used as a home.

At one time I was considering building an American Ingenuity Dome Home but these days It seems unlikely I will ever be able to build one. I've also looked into Log homes especially cypress log homes due to their resistance to bugs and rot. All long ago and far away but it didn't cost anything to dream them.

Ironically I have recently designed and begun to promote my own style of domes I dubbed "morphodesic." They morph from a square footprint to a spherical vertex. This is good because furniture tends to be easier to align with the straight walls of the primary geodesic level. They were intended for uses ranging from emergency housing all the way up to a mansion with a hyperbolic roof. A 10' x 10' x 14' prefabricated dome can be assembled in a matter of hours and goes for $2600.00.

What think ye?

From Miami to Nome,

No matter where I roam,

I'll never see a home

More UGLY than a Dome.

Sorry - Don't want to offend anyone's sense of aesthetics, but in my humble opinion dome homes are a genuine eyesore, and likely to arouse the ire of your neighbors. Good luck.

hehehe, some say that when I go out in the morning to get my paper I am violating the aesthetics of the neighborhood! I admit they are different. I like the American ingenuity ones the best but they are all so very different from the rectangular box we are all used to. One thing is for sure, if you live in a Hurricane zone they are much better than regular houses. They are guaranteed to withstand hurricanes, earth quakes and even tornado's. When you live in a hurricane zone that might be more important than style.

I have a friend in Indiana, and i helped him build his geodesic dome.

It was in the midle of a forest, and it suited his porpose. It even had a

area to put a chimney (it gets cold there). As far as i know, for the cost of building.

Time, materials, etc.

It was a great investment. It went up quick. It was pretty big, probably around 30m

in diameter. And the best part was he didn't have to pour a foundation.

Now on a macrocosmic level, you have the millenium dome. This is amazing because it actually creates its own weather system.

edit: millenium dome is not a geodesic dome,

My husband and I bought at Geo Dome a year and a half ago. The home is 30 years old and the only things we have done to it are cosmetic, like painting inside and out. I started a blog about it that might be helpful to you.

Geodesic Dome Living

Copy and paste the url and it will bring you to the blog which included pictures. We love it.

As of the moment I'm developing a different type of semi-geodesic structure that is designed to be an earthquake and flood proof home, or RV if it can't be classified as permanent housing. I call it a Podule because it is designed to escape those two disaster scenarios without harm to the occupants or the Pod. The Pod has room for gardening and can actually outlast a flood condition that would last centuries. I'll post more on it soon.

Not a precise fit here...but while we've got this trade deficit with China, 40-foot shipping containers are affordable and rugged...just saying.

This might perk some ideas... http://green.yahoo.com/blog/daily_green_news/8/twelve-amazing-shipping-container-houses.html

I drool at the monolithic domes myself-although the above are cute too. I would be required by the rules of narrative to paint it like a turtle with its' head drawn in.
