MaryT Posted April 26, 2008 Author Report Posted April 26, 2008 alexander: Yep, that one must be true. I have proof in my house! Thunderbird: It's been real interesting here! The day we had 8+ inches of rain was the day that three local levies broke, up and down river. It was a mess on the north and east ends of town, to the point that volunteers were trying to help keep the water back. I live on the south side, and we're pretty much blocked by the railroad tracks so nothing happened directly around me. We took a short trip to Pocahontas yesterday and the low lying areas still have too much water, to the point that some of the farmers can't plant their fields. I hate to see the repercussions from that. Hundreds of acres of corn, rice, or soybeans that won't exist in the summer. There are fields about 10 miles to the southeast that the water is so deep, they look like lakes. Literally. On a windy day there's whitecap waves! My predesignated picnic spot in Pocahontas, right next to the river is a little higher than it should be. Like, 15 feet. It's a beautiful park and I can't wait to take the kids there with our fishing poles and a big basket of food. Ahhh...life in the South :) Moontanman: Yep, here too! We have our garden spot tilled and ready to plant in a couple weeks, can't wait! I've even been saving some old potatoes to see how those do. And we'll always have the staple tomatoes, bell peppers, onions, beans, peas...(what else...) herbs... Since things grow so well out here and the price of gas is outrageous, I've promised myself that any watermelon, cantelope and other things that I'm not trying this year will be purchased from the local farmers. I saw on the Discovery Channel that most produce is shipped over 1700 miles to it's destination. Kind of sad really. We had another major storm last night. Lightning hit the tree across the street, which was old and diseased, and it took out a perfectly good willow tree. I'm gonna miss that willow tree! The town bucketloader was moving it off the street even before the storm was over which I thought was quite fascinating. We had both of the on duty police cars here too! I guess it was quite a major happening here in our little town! Quote
Michaelangelica Posted May 3, 2008 Report Posted May 3, 2008 Thanks for the warm welcome :eek_big: I should probably look into the Gardening Group after I retake my photos. I used my husband's camera, which I hate, and the photos did not come out good at all. Maybe someone can help me with identification in that group! Here at Hypography Management Central we are thinking of ditching the physics, maths, biology, astronomy & chemistry that no one understands, Also the interminable political, Darwinian and religious arguments and turning the whole forum over to gardening.Instead of "Hypography:- Science for Everyone."our slogan will be"Hypergarden:- Gardening for everyone."So welcome you have come at a great time :D have a great time (I do) Quote
alexander Posted May 3, 2008 Report Posted May 3, 2008 Hehe, Michael, I'm already writing 2 books "idiots guide to caving" and "monkeying for dummies" The first book, will only contain 4 words, and all those would be on the cover, the book itself will only contain pictures (so even cave men could figure it out) The second book will come with 2 special items, a vial of bacteria that will inject a simpler dna into the majority of the body cells, turning anyone back to their original primate state, the second one will be a pre-made wood, flint and rope spear. Multiple times. Quote
