joho Posted April 24, 2008 Report Posted April 24, 2008 Hi all, My dissertation is on the leaching of phthalates into water from 'plastic' water bottles, and I seem to have found phthalates in the water using LLE and HPLC! I just wondered if anyone else has done anything like this (I can't find much about bottled water) and if they have any comments, opinions or advice to give! ThanksJoho Quote
UncleAl Posted April 24, 2008 Report Posted April 24, 2008 Are there phthalates in the bottle material, including the cap and its liner? Are there phthalates in your reagents? Contaminating your glassware?Did said water contain phthalates before bottling? What is the ambient concentration of phthalates in tap water? DID YOU USE TYGON TUBING!!! Vinyl tubing and vinyl gloves are phthalate-plasticized PVC. Do you use Armor-All on your car? How much phthalate ester must a 70 kg human ingest to evince physiological effect? Does the kind of esterifying alcohol matter? If you don't like phthalates use Enviro-whiner citrate triesters. They have a different set of unknown hazards. Hey... use a leather bota bag to tote your water. See how much crap that leaches. Quote
