kazh Posted May 2, 2008 Report Posted May 2, 2008 I've been an actuary for over 30 years. I have a B.A. in math, which means I used to know some math, too. This forum looks interesting. Quote
CraigD Posted May 3, 2008 Report Posted May 3, 2008 Welcome to hypography, kahz! :eek_big: I think you’ll find it an interesting place. While most of the discussion here is about natural science – physics, biology, etc. – there’s a good bit about pure numbers. I’m always hopeful upon greeting a new member of the math-ish kind of some new attention to some of my and others personal pet math questions, such as 3203.I've been an actuary for over 30 years. I have a B.A. in math, which means I used to know some math, too. This sounds a lot like my background. I graduated with a B.S. in Math in 83, did a lot of stats consulting for grad students, taught college for a year, did a lot of computer programming consulting, then got swallowed by the IT (programming, by any other name) profession. Since I’d been messing with whatever computers I could lay hands on, occasionally and then continuously getting paid for it, since 1975, I like to joke that my professional life’s changed little since I was 15. :eek_big: I recommend browsing and searching (our search tool’s a bit underwhelming, but usable) the forums for what strikes your fancy – with rare exception, we leave old threads open, so resuming posting in ones that have been inactive for years is encouraged. Or you can just start new threads on your subject of choice – if there’re good preexisting threads on the subject, folk who remember them will usually post links to them to tie it all together. Have fun, and see you around the forums. :D Quote
Michaelangelica Posted May 4, 2008 Report Posted May 4, 2008 Big scary sums!I have an acquaintance (son of a friend) who got bored being an engineer and decided to go back to uni and do actuarial studies. Madness. he is also a brilliant bridge playeri am no good at even the basic sums , so our paths will probably not cross again unless I need some help with my sums? You could please have a look at the "mathematics of Terra preta" thread for me and see if all the posts are adding up to the same thing. It is listed in this sub-forumTerra Preta - Science Forums Welcome to hypography:) Quote
alexander Posted May 5, 2008 Report Posted May 5, 2008 You know there is more to this forum then pure math....... there are discussions on such non-math related topics as theoretical and applied physics, mechanics, chemistry, astronomy, rocketry, electronics... shikes i mean i guess i am not helping myself here.... Please, just be like me, you know, pretend that you know what you are talking about... Welcome to hypography, the only place you know where your iq fluctuates with the amount of participation you do in the community  Quote
