modest Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 From Phoenix Mars Mission - Gallery - Images It's a large rock at the very least. It would have to be smooth to reflect so much sunlight. Odd. -modest (loves this kind of thing ) Quote
Boerseun Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 Interesting! Doesn't look like lens flare, we can prolly scratch that possibility... Quote
modest Posted May 28, 2008 Author Report Posted May 28, 2008 Interesting! Doesn't look like lens flare, we can prolly scratch that possibility... Agreed. It seems to cast a shadow as well. I believe it's certainly a real physical object. I can't wait for the next pic of the area. -modest Quote
LJP07 Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 What substance could it possibly be made from that would be compatible with Mars terrain while reflecting so much sunlight? Surely it couldn't be an Iron based rock as there should be more reflecting rocks like these... Quote
C1ay Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 Part of something jettisoned during the lander's descent perhaps like part of the parachute shroud.;) Quote
Moontanman Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 Something ejected from the lander works for me, then again maybe it's Martians driving up to investigate the lander:hyper: Quote

modest Posted May 29, 2008 Author Report Posted May 29, 2008 Looks like C1ay may be spot on. From orbit the heat shield and parachute both look near enough to cause the anomaly in the image - The parachute most likely I'd wager. -source Had they put North on the pic here we'd know for sure. Actually, assuming up is north the parachute looks like it could easily be around azimuth 160 (same as pic) - so, yeah - Good call Clay! -modest Quote
