TheBigDog Posted February 2, 2006 Report Posted February 2, 2006 Take a moment for my grandfather, who would have been 109 years old today. He graduated from the Palmer Chiropractic School before graduating from high school. He later got his mechanical engineering degree in a class environment where he needed to fashion a working internal combustion engine from a block of iron. That's right, designing forms, forging and molding parts, and running it under a load to pass. He was also in the National Guard and was a member of the last mounted cavalry unit in the US. He got to keep his horse, Ace, when he retired. In WWII he was too old to serve, so he taught snipers stateside, as he was a champion marksman in his day. But I most fondly think of him for his 32 patents during his time working for Western Electric. He got paid $1 from the company for each patent, as his ideas were their intellectual property. Included on his list are; the electric soldering iron, the first phone with an internal bell, several advances in switchboard technology, technology used within the trans-Atlantic cables, the first custom leather work belt worn by telephone repairmen and several other time saving doo-dads. So every Ground Hogs Day I take a moment to reflect, and wish I could have known him better. He had my dad when he was 40. And my dad had me when he was 32, so I only remember him as a very old man. Standing about 5'2", with white hair and a hunched back. Maybe the most perceptive man I ever met. And his influence on my father has made him a role model for me, and continues to my kids today. Happy Birthday Grandpa! I know you don't mind me using that "cold-heat" contraption I got for Christmas! Bill Quote
