modest Posted August 14, 2008 Report Posted August 14, 2008 Science Buff Quiz Which Indian scientist got the Nobel Prize?Homi BhabhaDr. Vikram SarabhaiDr. Abdul KalamDr. C.V. RamanBhabha was a doctorBhabha received a Ph.D. in physics from Cambridge University in 1935, studying the physics of cosmic rays. -Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha It is now believed that dinosaurs became extinct because of:Viral diseasesHunting by early humansA worldwide period of climatic coolingA meteorite impact This isn’t too significant; but, C and D are not mutually exclusive and D may have caused an “impact winter” helping the extinction. I would suggest changing C to “Climactic changes due to volcanism” H2O is the chemical symbol forAny AcidAcidic AcidSaltWater Needs subscript in H2O and vinegar is spelled “Acetic Acid” The basic unit of power is calledJuleNewtonElectricityWatt “Jule” should be spelled “Joule” Paleontolgy is the study ofInsects Birds Ancient Life FormAncient Geographys“Paleontolgy” should be spelled “Paleontology”“Geographys” is properly pluralized “geographies”, but probably shouldn’t be plural at all. If you were to take a lump of coal and squeeze for a long time at very high temperatures, you would end up with:GraphiteVolcanic glass, also known as obsidianA smaller lump of coalA diamond A and D are equally correct (1) (2). I would change A to “Gold” The King of the Dinosaurs wasBrachiosaurusTrannosaurus RexDiplodocusDiplox Rex “Trannosaurus” should be spelled “Tyrannosaurus” I liked the quiz  ~modest Quote
Tormod Posted August 14, 2008 Author Report Posted August 14, 2008 I took the Singapore quiz. Fixed! And a more general "design" problem. A few times, on this quiz and others, I've accidentally hit the radio button below the answer I wanted to give, instead of the one above it. 'Twould be loads better if the button could be alongside the answer, or if a line space could separate the pairs. You're absolutely right. I'll try to fix it (it's a third party script). Edit: Fixed! ;) I took the "Hubble Space Telescope Quiz " My Score: 15 of 20 (75%) Only Two errors found. (and a trick question or two) Fixed! Embarrassing when you consider I worked for the Norwegian Space Centre for 5 years... :) Quote
Tormod Posted August 14, 2008 Author Report Posted August 14, 2008 Science Buff Quiz All fixed! ;) Thanks a lot. Quote
freeztar Posted September 2, 2008 Report Posted September 2, 2008 I took the Time Travel quiz and found some errors. Question #4 has broken code. The superscript in #5 is broken. Questions 6, 10, and 15 have <> instead of []. Question #14 has two correct answers: a and b. It seems to me that b is the more correct answer as the question dealt with the precession of time. Quote
Tormod Posted September 2, 2008 Author Report Posted September 2, 2008 Question #4 has broken code. I didn't see that. The rest has been sorted! :) Thanks. Quote
freeztar Posted September 2, 2008 Report Posted September 2, 2008 I didn't see that.Sorry, I got my notes mixed up. For question #4, the "correct" answer right now is: "Clocks move faster on the surface of the Earth than aboard a flying airplane" This should be reversed. Clocks tick slower on Earth compared to an airplane. Quote
freeztar Posted September 3, 2008 Report Posted September 3, 2008 Endangered Species quiz: Q2: According to this chart by the IUCN, there are over 2000 animal species listed as endangered. 2007 IUCN Red List – Summary Statistics for Globally Threatened Species Q3: According to the US FWS, 138 species of fish are listed as threatened or endangered. The list of species for the US from Mongabay is 883.Sources: TESS : Threatened & Endangered Species SystemList of Freshwater Fishes for USA (contiguous states) Q6: I recommend removing "because" for every choice. The rest seems good. Quote
Tormod Posted September 5, 2008 Author Report Posted September 5, 2008 I haven't fixed those yet, Freezy, but I have managed to tweak the quiz script so images are now being shown (took me three hours...I didn't write that script so I needed to dig deep to isolate a stray reference to a missing variable). I still need help from people: Go here and take a quiz, and report bugs in this thread: Science Forums - Quizzes Quote
