modest Posted August 10, 2008 Report Posted August 10, 2008 Oh - My - Gosh. Did anyone just see Michael Phelps OBLITERATE the world record in the 400m IM, to win his first gold medal for the 2008 olympics? Geeez. That was intense. I think it was a new Olympic record, but not a new world record. Of course, I think the new and old Olympic record and the 'old' world record are all his anyway, so hardly matters much in the end. But, yeah, he's half dolphin for sure. ~modest EDIt: Disregard the above, the fish has absolutely set a new world record. It was the 400 meter qualification round I saw  Quote
Tormod Posted August 10, 2008 Author Report Posted August 10, 2008 And Alexander Dale Oen from Norway set a new Olympic Record in the 100M Breaststroke semifinals...the finals will be a thriller!!! Quote

Tormod Posted August 11, 2008 Author Report Posted August 11, 2008 Alexander Dale Oen took the Silver in the 100M Breaststroke! That's fantastic! :) Even though his time was worse than in the semifinals. Can you imagine - 6 out of 8 swimmers made it under a minute...incredible. Quote
Mercedes Benzene Posted August 11, 2008 Report Posted August 11, 2008 Ummm.... Let's talk about the men's freestyle relay. It was honestly, the greatest relay that I've ever seen in my life. Jason Lezac was flawless. He definitely put those Frenchman in their place, after they talked all that smack. They were so sure they would win, but he caught up, to get a beastly time of 46. It was just absolutely perfect. That's what competition is all about. NBCOlympics.com - 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games | Free Online Videos, Olympic Event | Athlete Interviews | NBC Olympics Quote
Cedars Posted August 11, 2008 Report Posted August 11, 2008 The Swimming has been great! I love when world records are set at the games. I am still waiting to hear about the underdogs of these games. The Eddie the Eagle type story where an odd-ball becomes a crowd favorite. Something like the Jamican bobsled team... Afghanistan Beach volleyball team? Quote

modest Posted August 12, 2008 Report Posted August 12, 2008 Spoiler Alert Michael Phelps is 3 for 3 with another world record beaten by almost a second in the 200 meter freestyle. Are we placing any bets if he'll get all eight? Ian Thorpe is quoted saying he doesn't think he'll do it. I think he will. ~modest Quote

He's essentially one of the most powerful forces the olympics has ever seen. Quote
modest Posted August 16, 2008 Report Posted August 16, 2008 The 100-meter butterfly was amazing. Phelps won his seventh gold medal of the Beijing Games and tied Mark Spitz's 36-year-old record for championships in one Olympics, taking the men's 100-meter butterfly by 0.01 second over Milorad Cavic of Serbia... Cavic said the difference between gold and silver was too small to describe in normal terms. ``Maybe a shaved finger,'' he said at a news conference. ``It's something you can't show, it was that fast.'' -bloomberg 0.01 seconds :hyper: ~modest Quote
Michaelangelica Posted August 17, 2008 Report Posted August 17, 2008 So many records seem to be falling this games! How long can this keep happening at Olympic games? What is the limit?Phelps is very impressive. Will he make 8 GM or will the Ozzies stop him? ``Maybe a shaved finger,'' he said at a news conference. ``It's something you can't show, it was that fast.'When it gets down to 1,000 of a second I think it should be declared a tie. A footnote to the games England has poached a heap of staff and trainers from The Australian Institute of Sport to train their Olympiads for the next games. Quote
