Moontanman Posted August 14, 2008 Report Posted August 14, 2008 Lets discuss the various ways that real science says might be used to travel faster than light. Here is my first entry a new twist on an older idea. SPACE.com -- Spaceship Could Fly Faster Than Light Quote
Overdog Posted August 15, 2008 Report Posted August 15, 2008 Ok, here's another one... Lorentzian traversable wormholes would allow travel from one part of the universe to another part of that same universe very quickly or would allow travel from one universe to another. The possibility of traversable wormholes in general relativity was first demonstrated by Kip Thorne and his graduate student Mike Morris in a 1988 paper; for this reason, the type of traversable wormhole they proposed, held open by a spherical shell of exotic matter, is referred to as a Morris-Thorne wormhole. Later, other types of traversable wormholes were discovered as allowable solutions to the equations of general relativity, including a variety analyzed in a 1989 paper by Matt Visser, in which a path through the wormhole can be made in which the traversing path does not pass through a region of exotic matter. However in the pure Gauss-Bonnet theory exotic matter is not needed in order for wormholes to exist- they can exist even with no matter [6] A type held open by negative mass cosmic strings was put forth by Visser in collaboration with Cramer et al.,[7], in which it was proposed that such wormholes could have been naturally created in the early universe... Wormholes and faster-than-light travelSpecial relativity only applies locally. Wormholes allow superluminal (faster-than-light) travel by ensuring that the speed of light is not exceeded locally at any time. While traveling through a wormhole, subluminal (slower-than-light) speeds are used. If two points are connected by a wormhole, the time taken to traverse it would be less than the time it would take a light beam to make the journey if it took a path through the space outside the wormhole. However, a light beam traveling through the wormhole would always beat the traveler. As an analogy, running around to the opposite side of a mountain at maximum speed may take longer than walking through a tunnel crossing it. You can walk slowly while reaching your destination more quickly because the length of your path is shorter.Wormhole - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Quote
Moontanman Posted August 15, 2008 Author Report Posted August 15, 2008 Ok, here's another one... Wormhole - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Ok, good ideas, am I reading this correctly that the exotic matter worms holes can be artificially made to order (in theory) but the natural ones are where they are and to use them you would either have to be lucky enough to already be near a natural worm hole or travel sublight to one to use it? Overdog Posted August 15, 2008 Report Posted August 15, 2008 That's the way I read it. Also, it seems like there is a possibility of the made to order type to exist without exotic matter...:hyper: Quote
Moontanman Posted August 15, 2008 Author Report Posted August 15, 2008 Here is to me a very interesting theory, it actually predicts the masses of particles very accurately, much better than standard theory.
