I don't text. I pay for minutes. If I want to email, I do it here at the library. Yesterday someone tried to put a virus in "my" machine. They joined my IBasic programmer's site with the intent of selling me "virus software" that wasn't. Working on a public machine has its advantages. Time limit is sometimes a disadvantage, but it limits the time I spend on the net, so I have to be more efficient.

I love to daydream about beating texters' phones to bits:hihi:

But then I have subordinates at work that hide behind their machines, disappear into rest rooms, etc.etc. to send and read texts when they're supposed to be working:naughty: I would be ever so happy if it became company policy that "cellys" be left in the front office when not on breaks. It's a Welding shop not an internet cafe...dammit!

sometimes i do, but it must be extremely urgent for me to text, so i said no... because on a daily basis i do not text... and hate the concept of texting.... and everyone that overuses it... not in a bad way, just don't see how an intellectual individual could possibly want to text in most circomstances... takes 3 seconds to say the same thing over the phone, so why spend a minute typing it?

yes, i've had phone conversations on the stage of a 2000+ people booming D&B party. And there were 3 racks of amps for that sound system powering over 10 subs (big, and very heavy, commercial subs), and 20 speakers in an ex-theater... I mean we had to ask DJs to keep their gains in the sane zone, because when the bass hit, the lighters would go out....

As i said, most circumstances, not all. I mean for every situation you can give where texting is the best way out, there is a more common situation when texting is plain stupid.

Ever try to have a texting conversation behind the wheel of a car?

That's one of my biggest peeves. :banghead:

I hate seeing people texting in their car, while driving! My colleague freaks me out when she checks her Blackberry email when cruising down the highway at 70mph!! :)

We have a company policy that you have to use a handsfree system when driving to *talk* on the cell. No mention of texting or checking emails. :)

Texting while driving is illegal here in Washington State for some time now, and now unless you have hands free device, cell phones while driving also illegal. :banghead:

Texting offers security from being overheard.

"I'm not eavedropping; just in the vicinity paying attention." :)

Bluetooth head sets are my second biggest peeve... you haven't seen the faces of 65 year old ladies getting a porno track played over their "hands free" over their sound system while driving...

yeah, that and talking on your phone while holding it next to your ear, been illegal here as well, does not stop anyone, even the people that had to pay 150 dollar fines... more then twice...

Well, it can be wired, just hands-free in any case. That's funny as hell btw. :banghead:

It's enough to make one get a cell disruptor.

Ahhh.

I believe that cell-phone use/texting while driving is a danger to public safety.

However, the new laws against it here, in Washington & California, as Turtle alluded,is so that Police have another avenue in which to pull over a driver and make 'contact'.

Its another entry point for law enforcement. :banghead:

I like the law though. People should pay attention to driving and not cell-phones and texting.

Just a technicality, but as I understand it law enforcement can not pull someone over just for the phone/text use; it is a secondary offense.

Hands-Free: The Washington State Cell-Phone Law & Text Messaging Ban

Washington State has two cell-phone related driving laws going into effect in 2008. The first one is EHB 1214 and takes effect on January 1st, 2008. EHB 1214 bans text messaging and makes it a traffic infraction; this is not a hands-free ordinance, but a complete ban on text messaging.

Like many of the other driving laws across the United States there are exceptions during emergency situations or for on-duty public safety personnel. This is a secondary enforcement law, which means that you will only receive a ticket if you have been pulled over for another driving violation. Like the hands-free violation, this infraction is not placed on your driving record or reportable to employers or insurance companies.

:steering: :phone: :xparty:

:phones:[sound of plastic breaking from rear of car] "The reason I pulled ya over is ya got a broken tailight."

 :soapbox:

:oh_really: "How 'bout I make 'contact' wit your skull boy!?"

Its illegal here to drive and use your phone, but Im not sure what the laws on handsfree's are.. as you normally still need to click 'answer' and 'hang up'.

I also wonder how those laws translate to using your Ipod or PDA, what about choosing songs on your mp3 CD.. all distracting

It seems that everyone around here uses a phone while driving. I know my dad texts and sends emails from his blackberry while he's driving.... which is somewhat concerning.

DC now bans cellphone use while behind the wheel, but people can still be seen doing all throughout the metro region.
