In all such speculations about the Universe, we seem to assume that "materialism" is the sole manifestation that Universe is capable of and never consider that Universe may have other expressions we are unfamiliar with. It seems from observation that the expression "materialism" is contained in finite galactic-type confinements almost as though matter were quarantined from the "greater infinite Universe". A "greater-Universe" which may have its own character, motilities and creative focuses, on the "tides" of which Universal processes temporal materialism sails.

Hyper-material "substance" in the universe is certainly interesting to consider. Nonetheless, as you have presented it, this "greater infinite universe" is still contained within the universe (iow, everything included).

Speculative thinking about untestable phenomena is not scientific. If you would like to discuss these types of ideas, I recommend starting "new" threads in forums which are appropriate for the content.

I truly appreciate the way that Juggernot opens this thread by admitting his ignorance. I believe that is always the first step towards wisdom. I will also admit my own ignorance regarding the fundamental question asked by Juggernot, "What lies outside the Universe?"

What I do see are many paradoxes. LaurieAG & lawcat exposed one of the most interesting ones, is the Universe finite or is it infinite? Like all paradoxes, this question can be viewed from both ways. First, to ask Juggernot's original question, demands one to assume that there is a finite aspect to the Universe. However, when we peer into space we can only "see" as far back as the advent of the first photons or CMB. Where we are situated, we cannot "see" an edge to the Universe, so it appears infinite. However, the appearance of infinite-ness, does not necessarily mean that we are viewing something which actually is infinite. All that it means is that from our position of viewing, we are unable to view the ultimate boundary. Consider standing at the edge of Lake Michigan or any other vast body of water, to a child such a scene can appear infinite, though anyone with basic geographical understanding knows that is untrue. Therefore, if I was going to place my bet, I would say that analogous conditions apply. The Universe is finite, but from our vantage point it appears to be w/out boundary.

I also agree with Tormod when he says

The big bang did not expand "into" something, it created that something.

Thus the entire universe is "within" the area that was created through the BB.

That stance seems to align with the notions of finite-ness that I was just attempting to describe.

Now, as far as the first question, "What lies beyond the Universe." I go to say, "I don't know." There are several scenarios, but none of them are provable.

To all of you who enjoy these questions, please come and check out the new cosmologic model I am advancing. Your input is valued. The thread was started on the "Alternate Theories" subsection of the "physical sciences" board. The name of the thread is "The Dominium Model by Hasanuddin." Please first familiarize yourself will the new model by reading the three articles posting on my own website hasanuddin <dot> org (I apologize they are listed in reverse order...read thread #1 at the bottom of the page first)

Whatever the case, I'll probably see you back here on this thread
