plhys Posted October 3, 2008 Report Posted October 3, 2008 I came to Hypography to learn about soil science, particularly increasing soil fertility. I'm worried that the United State's current food production and delivery system is not sustainablel. I hope to develop the ability to grow enough food to contribute food to my local area. In 5 years I plan to more to some land near Lanette Alabama and start farming part time. I have a M.S. in Human Nutrition and have a moderate background in undergraduate science. Essay Posted October 3, 2008 Report Posted October 3, 2008 Hiya Paul,Welcome... to say the least.Personally I feel you are the future of humanity and will benefit greatly by browsing through some of the threads on the Terra Pretta Forum (sorry I'm not linking to it -i'm just lazy and busy now). Do you see that forum (sub-forum)? You can fairly quickly browse the "Contents" thread, but it won't make much sense unless you already have a familiarity with the topic, bio-char, charcoal, TP, etc. ...and if you can even find the "TP blog," or "friends group," throw in a hiya, comment, insight, etc.If not, let us know.... Just browse the topics on the TP forum and become familiar with the regulars... many with extraordinary knowledge, and/or experience/insight.... In addition to looking to the future, there's lots of practical stuff like aquaculture synergized with permaculture... or words to that effect. It may be a slow time on the TP forum right now, with the elections, economy, etc. :) ; but a good time to browse the collected wisdom so far, or join a rant anywhere....:) My interest in soil fertility came about via the whole greenhouse/CO2 sequestration angle, but it's all just part of one big sustainability picture, in the end. Natural fertility enhances sequestering; while artificial fertility degrades sequestration" is the basic philosophy that I approach thing from (how I keep trying to see if that's a valid principle). Let me know what you think.... Welcome again.... Cheers!~ SA p.s. That Terra Pretta "Contents" thread is weird, but let me know if it does help finding an area of the "Main TP" thread that interests you. ~ Quote
