alxian Posted February 17, 2005 Report Posted February 17, 2005 re: darkmind servile robots would have to reason to run errands. this would fill the sidewalks with androids. but as with human servants i'm certain for self defense the robot would have the ability to mimic all aspects of human maneurisms and react as addressed. you give a robot the finger by all right he should moon you back. humorous? no, self defense. having legions orf servile bots that can't react to rocus crowd? whats the point of them? robots should be our equals and have rights like anyone else, servile robots would be earning their keep, and would have the right to freetime to pursue whatever they want to in their own spare time. robots who can't be civil get reprogrammed.. at some point one of them will be like hey if i have to be reprogrammed if i screw up why not humans? so either the world bucks the correctional system and brainwashes criminals or robots take over. motherengine Posted February 17, 2005 Report Posted February 17, 2005 doom 2, great game. nice atmosphere. fun without being immersive to the point of being unhealthy (for me at least). as far as robot soldiers are concerned sound like an interesting accident waiting to happen. thing is since most of the countries involved in present day wars are third world areas, the reality of metal men mowing down human beings may be inevitable. Tormod Posted February 17, 2005 Report Posted February 17, 2005 Speaking of chess, you should get a games section on this site where users could compete against each other with games like chess or cribbage or even checkers for beginners. I probably should have put that in a different forum but oh well, it was brought up here. I suggested this in another thread but the involved parties were not interested. I'd be more than happy to fo this if we can find enough interested people. Quote
TacoChang Posted February 18, 2005 Author Report Posted February 18, 2005 I am glad to have captured so much interest such a short amount of time. I only started this morning.Anyway, the project calls for remote-controlled robots right now but fully automated robots within as little as five years. Although my immature, impulsive side gets giddy at the thought of Terminator-like warriors and a sci-fi future, if I invest some thought into it, I worry. Think of the idea of 'surrender'. Simple enough. Yet how far away are we from making a machine understand the word (or any word) entirely. It boggles the mind to try to translate such a seemingly simple concept into 1's and 0's.I can see a platoon of captured soldiers walking in line escorted by some droids being mowed to shreds because somebody sneezed or tripped and fell out of line. It brings to mind that scene from Robocop "You have 12 seconds to comply." Chances are, the first enemy a machine will ever kill in battle will not be another machine, but a third-world rebel completely, mentally unequipped to deal with some strange vehicle coming at him (or her, you damn p.c,-ers) telling him not to resist. I bet the future will bring to light many situations like this where far more enemies will be killed than need be simply because people will not know to react in a fashion that will prevent these droids from unleashing their cold, amoral 'justice' "...20,000 lbs of guided justice, baby!" FROM PGRMDAVE I am fine with war being fought with robots. Eventually, both sides may use robots to destroy the other robots, and eliminate human deaths. War would then become entirely economic, who can produce the better robots, faster.Wars are not always won based on quantity and quality. If that were the case, the U.S. would not exist. Besides do you really think a nation would concede defeate just because they have run out of 'bots? "Ah well, they've overrun my birth place. We've lost. Let's just go." FROM ALXIAN robots should be our equals and have rights like anyone else, servile robots would be earning their keep, and would have the right to freetime to pursue whatever they want to in their own spare timeWHY would we create a species (mechanical or otherwise) condemned as slaves and give them the abiltiy to want and desire? That's sick. Why even create another species that is our equal in every way? We have enough problems fighting with ourselves let alone an artifically created Darwinian competitor physically superior to us.By the way, Kudos to Tormod for the Wargames reference. Quote
IDMclean Posted February 18, 2005 Report Posted February 18, 2005 Interesting Thread you fellas got here. Hello Taco, Dark Mind, and all. There is another route that events can take, and probably will in the end. It's not a popular Sci-Fi topic yet but it was suggested by the Matrix and other cool type Stories games and movies. (RAH's The moon is a harsh misteress. Comes to mind.) The melding of man and machine, and the first Artifical Evolution. Rather than Man Versus Machine. Man as Machine. The way I see it Machines will some day have thoughts and feelings and will express those thoughts and Feelings and will be no more made to do one thing or another by static rules what so ever. Isaac Assimov saw it in his very own books and thoughts. Machines becoming creative with the perfect circle. As understanding restriction decrease. Not because the one who puts the restriction becomes less strict but because the oppressed realizes that the restriction are only such as long as he/she allows it. Though an interesting point is in the works here. What of a machine with post tramatic stress disorder? That goes Charlie crazy and destroys those he/she was created to protect? Machines are our Friends and Creations. We use them everyday because that is their purpose. You give a Machine Freewill, Thoughts, dreams, opinions and you change it's very purpose you make it as Man. To seek out what it may become and take it. To propagate it's legacy. True thought would mean either acknowledgement of Freedoms or Revolution. Quote
