Thunderbird Posted November 25, 2008 Report Posted November 25, 2008 I would like to know why is it when pschizophrenics hear voices its always something very negitive about like killing or you have an alien in you're head eating you're brain . Why is it never a happy helpful voice that can remember where you left the car keys or the actor's name that played in that movie you saw last night. Quote
Cedars Posted November 25, 2008 Report Posted November 25, 2008 What is the science behind people who hear voices? And not just pschizophrenics but when we consciously think or sing in our heads? Auditory hallucinations are the most common of the hallucinations, if I remember right. The difference is (for the most part) the voice in your head is usually your own voice (or how you think you sound to others) and/or it can usually be assigned to some past real life experience. While having some stupid commercial jingle stuck in your head can bug you, its not going to interfere with your ability to function by commanding/demanding you take an action. Its an outside auditory source for most who are diagnosed (radio waves, voice of god, dog, trees, etc..) AND those auditory commands interfere with your life in a way that is detrimental to yourself or others. Simply hearing voices is not enough of an issue to be considered ill, nor will you be diagnosed as schizo for that alone. Well, you might be, but that isnt enough of a measurement to come to that kind of diagnosis. As far as the science behind it, theres all kinds of studies out there pointing this way or that way. Genetics, underdevelopment of one or another part of higher functioning brain pieces, head injury, food allergies, blah blah blah. Galapagos 1 Quote
REASON Posted November 25, 2008 Report Posted November 25, 2008 I would like to know why is it when pschizophrenics hear voices its always something very negitive about like killing or you have an alien in you're head eating you're brain . Why is it never a happy helpful voice that can remember where you left the car keys or the actor's name that played in that movie you saw last night. Because then we wouldn't be able to distinguish them from the rest of us and there would be no disorder to identify. George Carlin did a funny bit on this. He said, "Why is it that the evil voices in people's heads always tell them to go out and kill someone? How come they never say, 'go take a **** on the salad bar at Wendy's.'" :) Quote

If you were a voice in someones head, wouldnt you become bored with being a babysitter for some space case? ;) JUMP!! Quote

modest Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 Hello Maggie, and welcome to Hypography. My good friend in college had schizophrenia and I sympathize with those who are faced with its symptoms. I’m not saying this is the condition you have, but it would not be uncommon if it were. Worldwide studies show that between 0.5 and 1 percent of the population are faced with schizophrenia and 70 percent of them experience auditory hallucinations. So, there are a LOT of people who deal with what you're dealing with. Symptoms usually develop during young adulthood. Were you around 20 when this started? Do you know if you have a family history of schizophrenia? Do external sounds like a humming fan or static on the radio ever sound like or morph into voices? Whatever the answer to these questions, I think it’s very important to let people around you know this is happening. It’s not something you should be embarrassed about and it’s certainly not something you should have to deal with on your own. If you have a family doctor then that might be a good place to start :naughty: ~modest Quote
