theblackalchemist Posted November 28, 2008 Report Posted November 28, 2008 It’s a gadget straight out of a science fiction movie: a machine that can make potable water out of thin air! The technology – its inventors say – promises to address the growing concern over lack of adequate drinking water for humans. An international team at Canadian firm Element Four has developed the device, called WaterMill, which it hopes could actually become the greatest household invention since the microwave. “We are offering a new way to satisfy the world’s thirst with the WaterMill, a system that provides fresh, potable water from an unlimited source: the air,” said Rick Howard, CEO of Element Four. “It’s a sustainable solution to many of the world’s drinking water problems.” The 3-foot-wide WaterMill works by drawing in moist air through a filter and over a cooling element, which condenses it in water droplets. It is designed to be attached outside the home, where the air is moist. The water is then delivered to various points-of-use systems inside the home, such as a sink faucet, refrigerator, or water cooler. The device is fitted with self-purifying technologies, and also employs the latest antimicrobial processes to deliver fresh and healthy water. Howard claims it can produce up to 12 litres of water a day – enough to meet the daily drinking needs of a family of six. He added that the device could generate more water when storms pass over, as the humidity in the air increases. At a cost of approximately Rs 1.5 per litre, the average operating cost of Rs 18 per day is a fraction of that of bottled water.
