Washington: Acupuncture works better than drugs like aspirin in reducing the severity and the frequency of chronic headaches, US researchers reported on Monday.

A review of studies – involving nearly 4,000 patients who suffered from migraine, tension headache and other such forms of chronic headache – showed that that 62 per cent of patients undergoing acupuncture reported headache relief compared to 45 per cent of people taking medications, the team at Duke University found.

According to study leader Dr Tong Joo Gan, acupuncture is becoming a popular treatment for various ailments, as people experience fewer side-effects and it is less expensive.

“This analysis reinforces that acupuncture also is a successful source of relief from chronic headaches,” he said.
