coberst Posted December 18, 2008 Author Report Posted December 18, 2008 In this discussion, how does reason differ from revelation? Do you think that reason contradicts or obviates religious teachings concerning morals and/or values?'If so, do you have examples? If we focus our attention upon the difference between the words “reason” and “revelation” we focus upon the seat of all of our problems as humans. I would say that the seat of all of our problems is an epistemological stool. ‘What can we know and how can we know it’ cannot be answered with coherence until we deal with this two world belief. It appears that the mind/body dichotomy comes starkly into focus here. Almost everyone seems to believe that there exists the natural world and the supernatural world and these two worlds seem to best express this dichotomy. When I speak of the mind/body dichotomy I often receive the response that “no one believes in that any more”. But of course, wherever there is a person who believes in a hereafter there is a person who accepts this dichotomy. Until we can put to rest this universal belief of the existence of two worlds we cannot develop a coherent concept of who or what we are. Quote
