Sugar can be addictive, says study

NEW DELHI: Sugar can be as deadly as drugs! Scientists on Wednesday presented evidence that excessive intakes of sugar can induce changes in the

brain which are similar to those produced in drug addicts.

Researchers at Princeton Neuroscience Institute have said that rats feasting on large amounts of sugar when hungry, a phenomenon described as sugar-binging, undergo chemical changes in the brain similar to those produced by substances of abuse, including cocaine, morphine and nicotine.

Besides, in some cases scientists observed that the excessive intake of sugar caused long-lasting effects in the brain and even induced the inclination to go for alcohol and other drugs.

"In certain models, sugar-binging causes long-lasting effects in the brain and increases the inclination to take other drugs of abuse, such as alcohol," Bart Hoebel, the lead researcher said.

"Craving and relapse are critical components of addiction, and we have been able to demonstrate these behaviours in sugar-binging rats in a number of ways."

The findings presented today at the annual meeting of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology in Arizona, US
