CraigD Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 From the mid 80s to the late 90s, I was one of those thousands (best estimates put the size of the 1991 Green Mountain gathering at about 30,000) of hippies, and might be again at any time. Speaking for a lot of like minded and experienced folk I know, I think the effect of rainbow life is almost completely personal: experiencing it shapes ones character, and both dispels a lot of fond fantasies while fostering new and deep optimism for humankind. That said, different people’s experiences can vary, and depend a lot on your closest friends. The rainbow family is, IMHO, best something eased into slowly and carefully, though I’ve know people who just dove straight in and did fine. Despite its focus on health and personal responsibility (eg: the ban on alcohol and “little white powders”), I’ve know a lot of nice people who got into dire addictive straits on this path, and some unnice people who preyed on them. A lot of setting suns, to float a reference. Within the rainbow family, there’s a strong consensus, almost a dogma, that the very existence of us has a transformative effect on society, or perhaps reality itself. This belief is, I’m as sure as I am of anything, beautiful, but utterly fantastic and false. Ultimately, to have an effect on the wide world of human culture, you have to get into its mainstream, serve, and lead the way people have for thousands of years. The best of the high holy hippies I knew in the 80s are now college professors and similar. Concerning the question “how to fix stuff”, I always like to quote a line from the Whole Earth Catalog that influenced me profoundly in my pre-hippy, pre-teen life (as best I can recall it):[referring to the world] “you can’t put it back together – it is together”Life is never without stuff in need of fixing (and tools with which to fix it), but what needs fixing and what is working well is often very hard see.
