freeztar Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 They are using crosslinked polyacrylamide. Here's a good description of the chemical and what it does: HowStuffWorks "How do polymer crystals work and why do they absorb so much wate" As the crystals are hydrated they form a gel. The gel stops the flow of water. As the gel loses water, they shrink down to their original small size and are capable of being used many times. modest 1 Quote
modest Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 One would have to question the wisdom of having a sandbag that floats. Maybe it could be used as a raft when the flood comes  ~modest Quote
