Turtle Posted December 16, 2006 Author Report Posted December 16, 2006 CMEs again. SOHO Pick of The Weeek I am gonna have to pay attention in the next two weeks. I love the northern lights. The big blasts a few years ago were not visible for me due to clouds. Spaceweather.com is reporting the most recent X3 blast produced aurora as far South as Arizona! Any of you see any? Nothing but stormy weather here so I'm out of luck. The SOHO page has revamped things with a new look, and a dandy one at that. Here's an animated gif series of the latest CME:http://soho.nascom.nasa.gov/data/LATEST/current_c3.gif Quote
Tormod Posted December 17, 2006 Report Posted December 17, 2006 We've had awesome auroras over Oslo the last couple of nights. Sadly I missed them completely (how I managed that is a bit difficult to explain since it is dark almost constantly now). Here's a story from one of our national papers:Northern Lights make unusual southern appearance - Aftenposten.no Quote

Sadly I missed them completely (how I managed that is a bit difficult to explain since it is dark almost constantly now). Here's a story from one of our national papers:Northern Lights make unusual southern appearance - Aftenposten.no I have taken to reading Aftenposten regularly to keep up on things in Norway and recommend it highly. I first got onto it when that meteorite hit the fellas outhouse! I noticed in the article it says the meteorologists were surprised by the aurora and I recommend they visit Spaceweather.com daily as they give forewarning when aurora are likely and how far South viewers might expect to be able to see them. Also cool to see you guys have an astronaut on the space station; is that helping to popularize space science in Norway Tormod? Quote

They talked on the news of how great the northern lights have been and wouldnt ya know it, its been CLOUDY!! That happened a couple summers ago when the big Xwhatever blasts occured during the summer and they were seeing great lights all over the USA. Everyone but MN/WI got to see them it seems... Today its sunshine (and I forgot to look last night). Maybe I will get to see some! Quote

Today its sunshine (and I forgot to look last night). Maybe I will get to see some! Alas, the storms have subsided. I'll try and make sure to post here when the next storm erupts, and send you a PM to give you a heads up. (I made a punny comment. :) ) Spaceweather.com has an interesting graph up on the X flares, which inspite of the Sun being at solar minimum right now, do occur. Turtle Posted October 20, 2007 Author Report Posted October 20, 2007 I happened to visit the SOHO site and while reviewing one of the movies of recent imagery I spotted an apparent giant "dimple" (bite?) on the Sun's limb as a coronal hole heaves into view. Attached is a still captured as a screen-shot from the paused mpg, right when the dimple is at its extreme. Red arrow mine. Here's the link, but it may only have this image in movie form for a short time from this posting. >> http://soho.nascom.nasa.gov/data/LATEST/current_eit_171.mpg Quote
7DSUSYstrings Posted April 7, 2012 Report Posted April 7, 2012 ___The recent X 17 flare:http://www.spaceweather.com/Stay tuned for more coronal mass ejections (CME's) from this active sunspot region.___If you go back in the SOHO page archive, you can see the effect of this erruption on the LASCO instruments:http://soho.nascom.nasa.gov/___ Spaceweather is on my desktop. I'll check out your particular link, but they had a lot of data links last time I went there, so I'd anticipate good data. Quote
