lemit Posted February 8, 2009 Report Posted February 8, 2009 I guess I'm supposed to introduce myself. I am interested in areas where science and either philosophy or public policy intersect. My history is not as a scientist. I'm one of those people who could never handle math. I've been a writer, editor, teacher (of writing), historian, librarian, and consultant on historic preservation. I'm now retired from all those things. Historic preservation got me interested in indoor environments, which got me interested in outdoor environments, although growing up on a farm in Missouri initially got me interested in outdoor environments. (It's good not to be too far from shelter when a storm's coming up.) So I'll probably try to apply philosophy or history or what seems to me to be critical thinking to the science other people are posting. Is that enough of an introduction? I hope so, because I don't like talking about myself this way. --lemit Quote

Michaelangelica Posted February 8, 2009 Report Posted February 8, 2009 Welcome:) I hope you are one of those , who like me, think math is a waste of time. (See "Primary school maths is adequate for. . ." )Science and public policy is arguablely one of the most important issues of our time. This is a nice, friendly, knowledgeable, generous community. I hope you enjoy your stay Quote
lemit Posted February 8, 2009 Author Report Posted February 8, 2009 I'm not sure, Michaelangelica, that I think math is a waste of time. I have many times used primitive math in the way Newton was using math when he created calculus (not the kind which can be removed by dentists). Unfortunately, I am so inept and clueless that I can't judge the merits of math. It's a foreign tongue representing a culture that is completely alien to me. If someone tries to explain higher math to me, I develop TMJ from having my mouth hang open the duration of my lesson. So I don't know. I think I respect people who know math. I'm just uncomfortable in the same conversation with them. --lemit Quote
