[Q] Can anyone point me toward a down load to update my modem?

I have a Lucent Win Modem ver. 5.0.0.2 It hasn't been updated since 2000 and it is not up to date, my PC is freezing up when i am on line. I have looked and looked but confusion seems to reign on the net. I keep chasing around in circles. I find a place that says free down loads for modem up date and I get nothing but more and more pages of nothing.

Maybe it's time to join the big boys and stop using dial-up modems?

Seriously though! If you spend a lot of time online, you will appreciate the speed increase of DSL or Cable!

When I was a wee lad, it used to take 10-20 minutes to download a 300k image. On cable internet, the same image takes about 1.2 seconds to load. :)

I used to have broad band, it was great, these days I have to get by with dial up. The modem on this computer is so out of date because I used to have broadband. When I had broad band it didn't seem important to have a great dial up modem, little did I know how far I would fall :)

I have the same modem. I doubt if updating will help. The service provider is unlikely to increase service or speed. Please let me know if I am wrong.

When I grow up I am going to get Santa to bring me ADSL broadband.

The only thing I miss is the video clips; which is where the net will all be soon. Forums like this will look like ancient papyrus scrolls and as indecipherable as we loose the ability to write and express ourselves.

It's not so much the speed although it will sometimes slow down to a crawl even by Dial Up standards but the freezing the screen, loosing the connection, kicking me off line stuff that really bothers me. I am about used to to no videos and slow down loads.

If there is a driver available, this program should find it (it's good for other drivers too!)

Modem Driver

Though, I don't suspect that the problems you are having are from an outdated driver. To me it sounds more like the symptoms of an infection. Have you performed AV and spyware scans recently?

I know bucks are tight right now, but for about 50, you can get a product such as System Mechanics to clean up the rest:)

For $50, he could get a brand new modem and a whole suite of cool tools. :)

Besides, Comodo is a firewall, not a system sweeper/cleaner.

For the free route, I recommend (and use on my own client's computers) the following:

Antivirus:

AVG Free

Panda online scan

AVAST

Trend Micro Housecall

Anti spyware/adware/malware:

Spyware Doctor

Adaware

Spyware Blaster

A word of caution. It's not a good idea to have more than one AV or antispyware program running at one time (in the background) as they can conflict with each other and cause problems.

Also, a really, really, really great program is the free ccleaner. I recommend that everyone use this program on a regular basis. Simply cleaning out your cookies and cache as well as fixing registry problems can fix a bunch of typical comp problems.

Feel free to contact me via PM, Moon, if you need further help resolving your problems. :)

I have

"spyware search and destroy"

"CCleaner"

"Advanced system care, pro edition"

"McCaffe virus program"

I run them regularly, still no help, I suspect my Windows XP "pirated edition" is becoming unstable.

I suspect that your pirated version does not allow you to perform critical windows updates. :)

When did you install it?

Uninstall McCafee and Advanced system care. Download AVG, update it, and do a scan. Download spywaredoctor, update it, and do a scan.

Report back.

I didn't install it, it was on my computer when I got it, my brother built the computer for me about 6 years ago, he had a license to load windows into several computers but I think he had exceeded his limit when he built mine. My computer was cobbled together from odd parts he had lying around. I paid for Advanced systems care just two days ago. Be kind of wastefull to uninstall it now. Is AVG really that much better than McCaffe? If it is I can get rid of the McCaffe suit that comes with AOL and go with AVG.

Well, I suppose you should go ahead and keep advanced system care, though I wish you had asked first as ccleaner appears to do the same thing, for free.

McCaffee is not terrible, but it can be a rather intrusive program and I've found it very difficult to use and configure without getting frustrated. The thing with AVs is that no single one is good enough for everything. You may have an infection that McCafee is not picking up. The only way to know is to scan with multiple programs. The online scans are great for this as you do not have to install a whole program, but it may be way too painful on dialup. Give AVG Free a try and see what you think. You can always uninstall it if you don't like it.

In either case, make sure to download some good anti-spyware progs (linked above) and get a decent firewall if you don't already have one (Comodo is good).

Another good thing to do when the system starts acting up is to run hijackthis and post your results to an appropriate forum to have your log analyzed. I've often found stuff this way that no scan detected. If you want, you can PM your results and I can tell you what to get rid of and what to keep. :read:

Oh yeah, are you using XP SP1?
