Turtle Posted May 27, 2005 Author Report Posted May 27, 2005 ___Now then, this brings us up to what's happenin' now folks. This poor dog has way more stuff than he intended! Good grief! I think somewhere above I claimed I could fit everything I own in my car & I now find I'm only half as good as my claim! That is to say I have twice as much as I thought. Nonetheless, I have moved into a new place all my stuff, & now I'm helping my housemates with theirs. I note they see things a little more my way now that they're faced with moving.___As I unpack in the new place you may believe I intend to throw out at least half of it in order to better minimalize. :hihi: :naughty: :hihi: :D ;) :hihi: PS In the above post, the last paragraph, you understand I intended to say the opposite of what I meant right? :hyper: Quote
Turtle Posted May 31, 2005 Author Report Posted May 31, 2005 ___Here is a small example of the kind of difficulty in minimalizing. I sleep on a folding cot which is one of a pair that bunks, & I have trotted these cots around now for the better part of 20 years. The thing is I never use them bunked as it is uncomfortable with the additional bars etc., yet I continue(d) to keep them both. I therefore resolve to dematerialize one at the first opportunity. Goodbye 6 pounds & +-2 cubic feet of stuff! ;) Quote
Queso Posted May 31, 2005 Report Posted May 31, 2005 yeah. unused potential isn't really fit for dog. Quote
Turtle Posted June 8, 2005 Author Report Posted June 8, 2005 yeah. unused potential isn't really fit for dog. ___Good point. May I expound? I have in mind the potential of mind, that is to say one's intellectual property. No packing it, virtually impossible to leave it behind, quantumly entangled, electro chemically manifested, yada yada yada.___Yet for all intents & purposes, one possesses this property & treats it accordingly. Keeping knowledge back for some selfish purpose or another is potentially wastefull of CPUTs :hyper: . Oh bother! Part of my resolve & interest here at Hypography is to unload much of this baggage; sure, I still have it, but distribution of a load is good multifunctionalism. Now where did I see that secret Katabatak graph? :D Quote
Turtle Posted June 13, 2005 Author Report Posted June 13, 2005 ___Now with all this stuff still, or any stuff whatever, there comes the need for containers. I have gone mostly to soft containers eg. nylon stuff sacks & carry bags, but I still have an annoying number of those palstic milk crates which I do use multifunctionally & yet bother me in their weight & volume. ___I resolve to do away with them as soon as I find the will. What containers do you prefer? Quote
Turtle Posted June 15, 2005 Author Report Posted June 15, 2005 ___So yesterday I tossed something I have carried around now for the better part of... er well...let's just say since before the advent of TI's desktop calculators. There's a clue! Now any of you still owning one yourself still may have guessed; yep, I threw out my slide rule (& its container).___Not only had I not used it in decades, I never used it well at all. Nevertheless, an engineer gifted it to me & I guess I kept justifying keeping it on that & also if the sky fell & calculators didn't work it might come in handy. Good grief & oh bother; how many CPTUs have I burned on that little fancy bit of bones?___Such a matter nevermore. Quote
Chacmool Posted July 15, 2005 Report Posted July 15, 2005 Oh Turtle, how do you do it? While you're minimalising, I'm maximising (and not always in a good way). While you're on the way to the dog, I'm on my way to becoming a hamster. I just can't throw things out - I'm too sentimental! For example, I kept all my notebooks from school - I figured that I had invested twelve years of hard labour in them, and couldn't just chuck them out. Quote
Turtle Posted July 30, 2005 Author Report Posted July 30, 2005 ___Ahhh Chacmool...as much accord you toss my way, take some comfort in the fact that I have yet to dispose of no less than 3 college papers. But first.... my lastest disaquisition. I tossed my Tarot deck, save for the zero card from the Major Arcana; the Fool. I intend to use it as a bookmark & occasional straightedge. I used to find some little enjoyment in using the Minor Arcana to play solitaire, but games seldom hold any lasting attraction for me. Besides, the volume & weight of the deck seemed unjustifiable.___To the papers; yes the papers. Sentimental stuff alright & wholey unjustifiable...yet, they persist. One paper argues that agriculture is an inspired theme in Anna Karenena, one is a technical paper on aerial kite photography, one is on Plato, & the last a critical review of the seminal work Obedience to Authority by Stanley Migram. Clearly, keeping these seems to violate my very premise of minimalization in the pursuit of dog. In defense, I only say I still may yet bannish them to flames; I am afterall just a novice. Quote

At the very least you can drop into a Starbucks and say, "hey, man can I bum 5 minutes on your browser off you?" Keep in touch pal! We'll miss you! Cheers,Buffy Quote
Queso Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 thanks guys. i have no idea what the internet situation is with this apt. i REALLY hope there's internet, if not, i am going to *have* to get it. this place has been my second home for like 10 years. oi! this is so exciting. although, i must say...san jose is a great city. tons of things to do, lots of different people.but, my favorites are san francisco and santa cruz. Quote
bumab Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 It's true, you are not on the coast... i was getting it confused with santa cruz. it's been a while since i've gotten down there. SANTA CRUZ is the best city in cali, so at least you are close. san fran's a little too big for me. but it's nice, all the same. good chowder. Quote
Queso Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 yeah! santa cruz is so laid back. you have the cliffs, the waves, the sunsets, the boardwalk, the lazy town, the smell. ah, it's epic. Quote
Dark Mind Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 Kind of going against the whole point of this thread eh? Quote

Minimalism is about having without *owning*! Hanging out on the boardwalk watching the buff guys (or in Orb's case, bodacious babes), listening to the waves and enjoying the waves with a margarita is the ultimate in "dog." Tequila time...Buffy Quote
