niviene Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 yeah! santa cruz is so laid back. you have the cliffs, the waves, the sunsets, the boardwalk, the lazy town, the smell. ah, it's epic. Time for me to move.... how bad are the earth quakes there? :) I'd rather suffer through those than the Ohio weather where it's snowing in the morning and when you walk out the door in the afternoon you turn instantly into steam. I love water... I'd be happy with a tiny house near the water, no matter what my income is. That sounds like heaven to me. As long as the water isn't anywhere near FLorida/the GUlf where all of the hurricanes seem to hit ; then my tiny house would be no more. Queso 1 Quote
Turtle Posted August 5, 2005 Author Report Posted August 5, 2005 ___Best of the travellers' lot to you Orby! ___ I recently did some reading on Buckminster Fuller in regard to math (duh!) & it seems he took a similar view to mine. My minimalist multifunctionism Fuller calls ephemeralism. Sacre bleu!___The dog at the beach is sometimes seen flying a simple paper kite. :) Quote
Buffy Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 Time for me to move.... how bad are the earth quakes there? :) I'd rather suffer through those than the Ohio weather where it's snowing in the morning and when you walk out the door in the afternoon you turn instantly into steam. As we like to say here: in California, the snow stays up in the mountains where it belongs: you can visit it whenever you want to but you don't have to *live* in it (unless you want to, and you can!). People go their whole lives here without being in a "big" quake. I managed to be in Washington DC for the 89 quake and was up here for the 93 quake in LA....I'm not even sure what a "big" one feels like... The main reason not to live here is the traffic and the cost of housing. So if you're thinking of doing it, be prepared to get a high paying job or be living out in the boondocks.... Cheers,Buffy Quote
Queso Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 heh. so true. the boondocks is where i'm headin' :) Quote
niviene Posted August 8, 2005 Report Posted August 8, 2005 One of my best friends lives in LA and he constantly tells me how horrible the traffic is there... when he comes here he just wants to drive on the highway because he can't believe there are places where you can actually drive without it being bumper to bumper traffic  I also have an uncle who lives in San Fran, and I love to visit there (gorgeous place) but I'd hate to drive there. And yea, I have heard of the horrendously expensive cost of living. My friend in LA used to work and live in Hawaii, and when he was getting job offers, he was telling me they were offering him much more in LA, but he was explaining that it wasn't really "more" because of how expensive it was to live there... more so than hawaii?? Geeeeez. Quote
Racoon Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 ___I have this current obsession to minimalize my posessions & other entanglements, in the vein of Diogenes the Dog. Unlike his days however, they lock you up now if you try to live naked in a pot. Just so, I try to strike a reasonable balance wherin what I do keep must have multifunctionality.___The hardest things to rid myself of are gifts from others & I have been at this long enough that anyone that knows me well enough to give me a gift, knows better.___I feel guilty to have anything, since it means someone else doesn't have it. I feel guilty for any art I produce, the electricity I waste doing computer experiments, &...___Anyway, my obsession is to have nothing more than I need or can maintain, while remaining free. I too am trying to Minimalize as much as possible.I really enjoyed the insight from reading much of this thread. Attachment is the root of suffering. Although I need to be clothed, and have a bed, I really am less concerned with the welfare of my possesions. A few plants,a few books, a statue of Buddha, and some really nice Nike Shox for my feet. Oh, and my Mtn. Bike for minimalist, yet efficient transportation. Many times the truck just sits in the driveway. This is a great thread Turtle-san! Glad I stumbled on to it as i was snooping around your Threads. :) Quote
Queso Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 ah, welcome back thread.Lately everything i create, i destroy.I progress thru mind.Save my legacy for later. If i even care when that time comes. Quote
Queso Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 attachment is the root of suffering? Sometimes, but all the time? Quote
Boerseun Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 Attachment is the root of suffering....only when using Yahoo... Been tryin' to mail my mate Orby a song for the last hour now. I am officially giving up, as of... ...wait for it... ...wait... ...wait... NOW. Quote
Racoon Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 Ok, I fibbed a little bit, I forgot to mention that I also have a Radio, Fishing equipment, and some pictures. When Shaolin monks left the Temples, all they possesed was a staff and a bowl. It will be hard to minimalize down to that! :) Quote

It will be hard to minimalize down to that! :) :)While the Shaolin monks have a lot to offer the world philosophically, mentally, and in terms of physical up-keep, remember that not all of them left the temples of their own accord. Many were forced out, and even killed, by the empororer. There's some story where only 5 children were left alive and it was up to them to carry on the knowledge of the temples... but I'm not a story teller myself, so go look it up if you're interested. :) Quote
Racoon Posted February 21, 2006 Report Posted February 21, 2006 True Dat InfiniteNow. Some got kicked to the curb, and others got wacked. :) Some went on a spiritual journey. The Staff was for walking and protection. The bowl was for alms. Which Chinese diety poses as a bum? I forget.. Anywho'sI also have a ComicBook collection that I'm gonna try and sell here at a Convention soon. The rest I'll try to pawn on E-Buy.Comicbooks for Textbooks. :) And, I also have some knick-knack patty-wack stuff I can try and rid myself of.I am pretty good at Minimum though; compared to the people around me.Turtle has done an excellent job with his reductions. Some of the books ending up in my hands.Including "The Fractal Geometry of Nature" If anyone of you Math Dudes wants it, I can send it to you!I'll even pay the shipping! :) :) seriously. Its a nice book, and explains how nature is so geometrical with Math formulas! I also have a Chess Set, and some souveneirs from Venezuela. Now that I am taking inventory, I realize I don't have Squat! And thats the way it should be. :) It even says in the Tao Te Ching.! Quote

I now have just a dozen books & it's very difficult to choose more to dematerialize.___I am again faced with a forced move as the landlord passed & his widow has put the place on the market. I have packed most of my math & the little rest I possesed is ready to go at a moments notice.___If not for responsibilities to housemates, I would move to the forest.___Finally, we have a Classifieds module here that hasn't fully bloomed; buy , sell, trade, or give away at Hypography.http://hypography.com/forums/announcements/4160-classifieds-section-open.html?highlight=classifieds Quote
