mynah Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 I have a 2 Gig monthly cap, but until recently I'd rarely use more than 30 percent of it. In December, however, my usage shot up, and since then I have really struggled to stay within my limits. I haven't made major changes to my browsing habits, haven't listened to music online, and very rarely look at videos. I often keep multiple windows open when I'm doing research - but I have done so in the past, so no real difference there. I have been using Firefox for the past two or three years. It does seem as if my service provider's home page has more blinking lights, alternating photographs, etc. than before: Could that be the problem? Could someone else be using my bandwidth without my knowing it? Should I be suspicious of changing banners and even the hyperactive smileys on the right? Quote
alexander Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 why don't you put a router between yourself and the tubes with traffic logging and analysis tools and monitor your web traffic.... that or fire up wireshark for a day or two to find out what if anything, out of the ordinary is going on... Also 30% of 2 gigs, really? i use nearly that on my phone... also what ARE your browsing habbits, and what are you using for networking hardware, how many people have access to the computers at your house... 2gb is really not all that much in today's world :phones: Also, over the past few months, the world of porn has changed, with more and me more and more video streaming sites appear, you tend to use more and more bandwidth which probably is why your bw jumped like that when you found the free video streaming sites.... freeztar Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 I've never heard of a bandwidth cap from an ISP. That would drive me crazy! Do you pay per bandwidth cap, or are there other options available? Are you using a wireless router? If so, do you have WEP or WPA enabled? Quote
Theory5 Posted March 24, 2009 Report Posted March 24, 2009 Do you connect through a wireless hub or through a regular wired hub? A wireless hub/router with a WEP key can be cracked with a laptop in roughly 10 minutes with the right software. However a WPA can't. And a wireless hub/router without any protection is open to anyone with a wifi connection. No. Even if it does use more bandwidth it wouldn't be enough to change your usage noticably. Do you have a firewall and anti-virus software? Try running a scan. It won't hurt. :-) and you might find something. I agree with freeztar, what ISP gives you a 2 gig monthly cap? I know sooner or later comcast is going to impose a limit and severly punish (shutting off internet for a few months to a year, then for a year or two the second time.) anyone who goes over the limit, but the supposed limit is huge, like a couple hundred gigs per month. The only way to go over that would be to run a server or three. Quote

However a WPA can't5 minutes, hell takes less then 7 minutes with my EEE, and WPA can, but it depends on things, if your key is less then 13 characters long, takes less then 1 minute to crack it... granted you already have the rainbow tables loaded into mysql (roughly 24-25 gigs of data) Quote
