abx-sun Posted March 26, 2009 Report Posted March 26, 2009 Dear friends,I found this comunity by searching the behaving of the sun.I am retired engineer from IBM and one of my hobbies is HAM-Radio(Amateur Radio), which depends a lot from our sun.The sunspot cycles define the short wave communication paths with their strong influence on producing ionization ot the ionosphere.Just now, we are in somewhat abnormal long period of zero sunspots.Let's see how this will continue... Felix Quote
sanctus Posted March 26, 2009 Report Posted March 26, 2009 Hello Felix, eventually someone who comes from Switzerland too!! Since I joined (sometime in 2004) it happened only once. Welcome!By the name I would say you come from the german part? Where abouts? Quote
abx-sun Posted March 26, 2009 Author Report Posted March 26, 2009 Hello "Sanctus" yes you are right.I am living in Basel, close to the German border, and our main language is German, but we also speak French here, as 3 countries are coming together in Basel. The river Rhine, that leaves Basel direction to the north, formesthe border between France and Germany, and by bycicle we makefrequently a tour to France to drink a French wine, then crossing theriver to eat a German saucisse together with a beer from Munich ... ;):):) Quote

sanctus Posted March 26, 2009 Report Posted March 26, 2009 abx-sun, I just noticed that the places where one comes from underneath the avatar have disappeared...otherwise you would already know: I lived in Obwalden until I was 10 years old, then moved to Locarno (Centovalli to be precise), then I moved to Geneva (to study), then to Bern, then to Zuerich and then to Oslo...somewhere in between I have lived in Australia for a year... Hast Du gesehen, dass wir ein deutsches "unter-Forum" (=subforum?) haben?Et aussi un en français? Quote

It has also been used frequently during disasters (fire floods etc.). I think the "Flying Doctor" service still uses it. I notice in some weather conditions I can pick up radio signals from commercial radio stations thousands of K away, when I can't pick up my local Community Radio 15K away! I love war history -WW2- especially the clandestine operations. During the war there was a race between Germany and UK developing better radar and bombing devices. When the Poms (English) started destroying many more German planes at one stage the Germans became suspicious. To put them off the track the Brits put out that they were feeding their aircraft-men with carrots which gave them suburb night vision. (Carrots had only previously been used as horse food) That myth still persists ; my mother always told it to me when I demurred at eating her over- boiled carrots. I would love to learn more about the sun and how it effects/affects communications.;) Quote
