Not legally in the US or Canada. Like nearly all drugs, Valtrex may be purchased without a prescription in Mexico, but must be declared to customs if brought into the US, and may be refused unless you have a MD’s prescription for it.

Although antivirals such as Valtrex aren’t controlled substances, having effectively no potential for abuse or black market sale, they can have dangerous side effects, most notably kidney failure. Although these most dangerous side effects are very rare, and less dangerous ones uncommon, because of them, I think it’s unlikely that they will soon become available over-the-counter.

Acyclovir is a similar, older drug with fewer and less severe side effect. Although many expected it to be approved for over-the-counter use in mid 1990s, I see that this has not happened.

Rather than try to get these drugs without a prescription, I recommend seeing an MD and getting a prescription. If you lack health insurance, you should still be able to find MDs who will see a patient and write prescriptions to treat herpes and shingles for a reasonable, and in some cases, reduced or free, fee.
