[Q] hypnogogic and hypnopompic imagery

If phantoms we see upon opening or closing our eyes as we drop off to sleep or just wake up, are projections of the mind - what are we projecting them onto, that they appear 3-D? (film projected onto anything but a flat screen, bends round the object it's shone on, so why not what the mind supposedly shines onto the outside world, if this is the answer to ghosts, aliens and other night time phantoms?)
