Queso Posted March 10, 2005 Report Posted March 10, 2005 Hey I've been curious about a couple things around here lately....first off, what are the referels in your profile? I've noticed some people have some, and some don't. and also, how do you pronounce hypography??? when i tell people about this website, i'm unsure how to say it.is it...HYPO graphyor..HYPOG raphy? oy, thanks. :) Quote
pgrmdave Posted March 10, 2005 Report Posted March 10, 2005 The referrels are explained in the FAQ, http://www.hypography.com/scienceforums/faq.php?faq=vb_board_usage#faq_vb_referrals_explain as for pronounciation - "Hypography" is A combination of "hyperlink" and "bibliography" so, it is the "hyp" from hyperlink and the "ography" from bibliography. The rules of english are such that the "p" would probably be linked to the "o" more than the "hy". So - Hy-po-graphy, with the 'o' pronounced as it is in "bibliography" Quote
Buffy Posted March 10, 2005 Report Posted March 10, 2005 Yah, but that doesn't explain which syllAHble you're putting the emPHAsis on! HYperlink with bibliOGraphy would imply its pronounced HY-po-OGraphy, since the combination happens at a common letter--the O--which often means you repeat it. Its not obvious... I like hy-POG-raphy myself, but we need to hear from the founders on original intent! Etymologically yours,Buffy Quote
Queso Posted March 10, 2005 Author Report Posted March 10, 2005 thanks a lot, phew. *wipes forehead. Quote
pgrmdave Posted March 10, 2005 Report Posted March 10, 2005 Before I settled upon that post - I had written that I pronounced it hi-PAH-gruh-fee, but I then decided that an explanation of the word might suffice. I did consider editing my post to show where the emphasis was, but I decided against it. Quote
zadojla Posted March 10, 2005 Report Posted March 10, 2005 I pronounce it to rhyme with "pyrography". Quote
Buffy Posted March 10, 2005 Report Posted March 10, 2005 I pronounce it to rhyme with "pyrography".Not sure I know where to put the emPHAsis on that one either! PYro-graphy? Do I have to get out my dictionary? Syllabically,Buffy Quote
zadojla Posted March 10, 2005 Report Posted March 10, 2005 I was being what beccareb calls "stupid on purpose". I forgot the smiley that should have gone with it.I pronounce Hypography the same as prgmdave, "hy-POG-raphy". Quote
Buffy Posted March 10, 2005 Report Posted March 10, 2005 Smiley was inferred! I betcha we 'mericans pronounce it way funny according to the Europeans. We need to hear from the source of course, but I want to hear how Sanctus and Tinny pronounce it too. The internet is weird this way.... Smile, Smile, Smile!Buffy Quote
C1ay Posted March 11, 2005 Report Posted March 11, 2005 Before I settled upon that post - I had written that I pronounced it hi-PAH-gruh-fee, but I then decided that an explanation of the word might suffice. I did consider editing my post to show where the emphasis was, but I decided against it. This is the way I've always pronounced it. I know it's supposed to be a blend of hyperlink and bibliography but hy-poh-graf-fee just didn't sound right to me. So tell us Tormod, how do you say it? Quote
TINNY Posted March 11, 2005 Report Posted March 11, 2005 We Malaysians pronounce it as Hee-po-gra-fee. Note tthere is no emphasis. The sound 'gra' comes from sligtly further inside your mouth near the throat with a gaping mouth, whereas americans would use the roof of their mouths to get that twang. and oh, malay language does not have 'y' as a vowel. it is a consonant similar to 'h'. eg: 'shout' could be spelt 'syout'. Hope that helps. Quote
