sanctus Posted March 11, 2005 Report Posted March 11, 2005 Just a curiosity: all the representations I encountered where applications from the group to a "the linear transformation of a vectorial space" (i.e automorphisms of a given space i.e. matrix representations). My question is simply if someone knows if other representations are used in physics (i.e automorphisms of spaces that aren't matrices (or tensors))? Hope I was clear....and thanks
Bo Posted March 14, 2005 Report Posted March 14, 2005 the generator of the group of translations has as representation:P_m =i d/dx^mand generates the momentum. (of course this is still an operator that applies to some vector in a hilbert space) Bo
sanctus Posted March 14, 2005 Author Report Posted March 14, 2005 thanks! now as I read it I think I saw it already somewhere ....
