Dark Mind Posted March 11, 2005 Report Posted March 11, 2005 How often do you believe debates in here come down to semantics (the way a person views the meaning of a word)? Quote
Tormod Posted March 11, 2005 Report Posted March 11, 2005 About all of the time. It depends on what you mean by "meaning". :) Quote
Dark Mind Posted March 11, 2005 Author Report Posted March 11, 2005 Nice... I mean the way you define something. Define - The meaning it connotates to you and the other words and emotions you associate it with. Quote
bumab Posted March 11, 2005 Report Posted March 11, 2005 Almost all the time... reminds me of Plato. The majority of his arguments hing of semantics. Quote
Turtle Posted March 11, 2005 Report Posted March 11, 2005 :cup: ___Very good point. This is why it is so important to define your terms when putting forth an argument or point. The very foundation of expositional writing in fact. If you leave no doubt to what you mean by each term, you avoid a lot of misunderstanding.___That said, when an argument or point is put forward with well defined terms, it is thoughtless & unwarrented of others to try & redefine said terms. Here at Hypography, if you wish to define a subject under different terms, it seems appropriate to start a new thread to do so.___Inasmuch as language changes constantly, whether by culture, time or other reason, definition of terms is critical to exposition. OpenMind5 Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 I agree also...Semantics can really through people for loops and leave u on the top.Op5 Quote
