Poppies

Does anyone here grow poppies? What variety?

 

I was looking into buying opium poppy seeds (Papaver somniferum), but question the legality. Wikipedia says that the plants are illegal (schedule II under the DEA) but their possession is often not enforced in home gardens. I ask not because I want opium, I just really like the way they look. B)

 

So can you buy seeds? They're obviously available for use in food.

i have several varieties of poppies growing, my favorite is the native California poppy. B) i'm seriously considering pulling the non-natives (iceland poppy & corn poppy; see my wildflowers album: >> Science Forums - Turtle's Album: Wildflowers)

 

as to opium poppies, i don't grow them, but have in the past as i had an old woman living next door that grew them & she gave me some seeds as she thought i looked like a fella that could use some raw opium. B) B) so anyway, yes it's illegal and not worth the trouble to risk getting caught. they just busted some opium grows down in Oregon that someone planted out in the woods on an Indian res. >> Yamhill County Opium Poppy Bust - KOINLocal6.com
