The expansion of the universe is indeed accelerating. The red-shift tells us that the universe is expanding (doppler shift: red has the longest wavelength). There is something called the "dark energy" that causes the expansion to accelerate. Dark energy is the opposite of gravity. While gravity pulls in everything together, dark energy opposes that and pulls everything away.
