Michaelangelica Posted July 30, 2009 Report Posted July 30, 2009 I think I have a gut bacteria producing VLA of gas.a) What could this be? How could I test for it? Quote
freeztar Posted July 30, 2009 Report Posted July 30, 2009 What is VLA? EDIT: Nevermind...I assume it stands for very large amounts, yes? If so, then there are a lot of factors to consider. I would start with diet. Certain foods can trigger gas more than others (cheese and beans come to mind). Otherwise, you might have an imbalance in your digestive flora. You can test for this, but I don't recommend it if gas is your only symptom as digestive tests are quite expensive. (I just did one recently myself for $200) I would suggest adding yogurt/acidophilus to your daily intake and see if that helps the situation. Though, I would caution that if it does not go away it might be a symptom of a bigger problem in which case you should consult your physician. Quote

The gastro-doc. has given up. I have tried all the lactobacillis about. (I think they make it worse). It is becoming VERY debilitating. I have had it for about 4 years I just woke myself burping after a couple of hours sleep. It seems to get worse when I lie down. My stomach is like a balloon going up and down.I did have a bowel cancer successfully removed 4 years ago. I have tried all sorts of dietary restrictions. Despite my Celtic genes, the Doc says I am not coeliac or lactose intolerant (??).I was thinking of eating some Kangaroo Poo. Quote
freeztar Posted July 30, 2009 Report Posted July 30, 2009 Did your doctor do a full GI panel on you? (several stool samples over days and a saliva test) Quote
pamela Posted July 30, 2009 Report Posted July 30, 2009 Improper eating and chewing habits can allow you to swallow air and thus fill your stomach. Are you sure it is a gut bacteria? Do you have pain in your abdomen prior to the gas? Sometimes blockages can occur at your duodenum and will cause discomfort. Although there are many gaseous foods such as what freeztar listed as well as cruciferous produce, common foods can create a blockage. Without getting enough information and other symptoms from you, the scope is too wide as to what may be the cause. Let me suggest looking at IBS, first and see if you may have some of these symptoms in addition to the gas.Feel free to message me if you would like to discuss any aspects that you may not feel comfortable in posting in this threadIrritable Bowel Syndrome Michaelangelica 1 Quote
