By remarkable coincidence, I was going to ask if it is known whether cancer is passed to the baby by the mother, through the placenta - only to recently see it being brought up in a newspaper report about a case in China I believe.

Does anyone know anything about this?

Try this link to a BBC story.

BBC NEWS | Health | Mother can pass on cancer in womb

I arrived at that link by searching Reuters, so it has the imprimatur of a source I trust.

The full article referred to (somewhat obliquely) will not be available online for anothe six months. If you have access to a research library, ask for the issue of "Proceedings of The National Academy of Sciences" (that's the correct title) dated October 12, 2009.

Good luck.
