paigetheoracle Posted November 2, 2009 Report Posted November 2, 2009 Watching a Western on the TV recently, I noticed that when some gunpowder exploded, it created a gigantic smoke ring, where the inside poured up and outwards, going back down and then through the middle again - what causes this and is this the same mechanism at work as blowing smoke rings as I should assume? Jay-qu Posted November 2, 2009 Report Posted November 2, 2009 Yes, they are examples of vortex rings - they can be remarkably stable sometimes and disapointingly feeble others.. The most incredible example of vortex rings I can give you is this:YouTube - Dolphin Blowing Rings http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2m6ie3MVIAw Just amazing.. Quote
