If my experiences with my daughters iphone and my ipod are anything to go on...it would most likely be the most infuriating device I ever owned....it is funny that a company that pushes how user friendly it's products are makes the most user unfriendly products and software I've ever encountered....

That is interesting, it is the first time I have ever heard that complaint regarding the iphone or ipod.

The iPad is basically a iTouch with a 10 inch screen that you can put a background on. I would never buy something like that fo about $600 since I could just get an iTouch for much less

Very true, and if you don't want something that portable, with that much screen space, it definately isn't for you.

Since I was looking at a Kindle DX and can soon get an iPad for $10 more with a lot more capabilities, it is an easy choice for me.

Oh I'll defend DD here: I've heard a few similar tales of woe, but then again some of us are smart enough to get those plastic scratch thingies (they do work, ignore the warnings) for the front and the extra thick rubber jacket (I've got a cute pink one) that makes it possible to drop them endlessly and keep on ticking...

Nerds don't just happen to dress informally. They do it too consistently. Consciously or not, they dress informally as a prophylactic measure against stupidity,

Are you referring to dropping them? I have done that myself and know how easy it is to do:)

From DD's post though, it seemed he was taking apple to task with the interface being very user UNfriendly.

I don't think he meant dropping them, but perhaps he did:shrug:

Oh I should have explained: quite often they get broken before people really learn the interface, so it's psychological transference at work.

I'm also in the camp that says that Apple's UI designers know what they are doing: "Easy to Use" is NOT the same thing as "Easy to Learn" and in the end, designing for the latter means you fail at the former. They know this and so almost by definition, Apple UI's are "hard to learn"...of course once you learn them they make sense because they're incredibly consistent, even across hardware.

For the record I spend most of my time on Windows, and the rest of the time on Mac's, mostly because I need to make software work across both platforms. But you'll pry my iPhone from my cold, dead fingers!

You can't just ask customers what they want and then try to give that to them. By the time you get it built, they'll want something new, :phones:

Aha, thank you for clearing up my confusion:)

Heh, I know what you mean. I actually spend all my time on Mac's and almost all of my time on Windows. I love Boot Camp:)

Part of where I am coming from is that the interface of the iPhone works for me, where no one else has been able to do so. My case is unusual though, as I have a familial tremor which completely destroys any hope of using a 'grafitti' type recognition system (oh how I tried). And a physical keyboard is just to bulky to be carrying around with me.

I am still hopeful of 'The Minority Report' type interface though:hihi:

K I clear this up....

The folks at Apple seem to hate Nux....as evidenced by recent generations of iPod which refuse to function properly with [Debian and Ubuntu in my case] you either run an emulator or have windoze cuz the old applications of iPod capable goodies don't function well with them.

In 'doze only itunes works well for tune related things but as an added bonus makes multiple copies of your tracks flubs up their tags and to make matters even more fun does not have a function to convert to smaller file type resulting in 4 or 5 gig taking up 15 to 30!

Making matters even more fun unless you give them a credit card# importing cd's means in many cases no tags or art work.

So far I have many hours [read as days now] invested in just trying to get my music back in order and the duplicates removed.

Anyways it gets real fun when you've got somewhere near 11,000 tracks to begin with.

Did I mention how much fun syncing is a or how long it takes or how often mine flubs up and forgets to put anything into the iPod.....until you eject it which of course is when it finally decides to do so after having a whole night to do it....much better to do a twenty minute long sync right when your trying to shoot out the door to go to work.

still can't get my videos to sync automagikly with everything else like they're supposed too.

The only way I see to actually have an easy time with their products is to only have their products and of course not mind giving them bastards yer credit card numbers.:phones:

I dunno maybe I'm an idiot or sumthin:shrug:

oops! I gorfet huge footprint when running!! (iTunes)

OOOOOOOoooooooo.......Real makes a reasonably good substitute for iTunes... but it still should not be such a pain to manage tracks...of course tracks purchased through iTunes prolly behave perfectly ...and it still irritate me that I can't get them to play well in Nux.

Oh well *there's* your problem: you need to run a *real* operating system! [buffy ducks]  :cheer:

The iPad is certainly cool when you just want to lay on the couch/bed and surf and read. I wouldn't mind it for that, but not for $500-$?.

Until it has a real OS, cross platform capabilities, and power that I can actually take advantage of, it's dead in the water as far as my pocketbook is concerned.

Any word on this, Z? (or others)

Far too early yet. For me to tell I need to get my hands on one which won't happen for a couple of months?

As for the price point, I think they are taking direct aim at the Kindle DX buyers. For $10 more, the ipad is capable of SO much more.

I might hold out for a 'real' operating system if I wanted something that could replace my desktop or laptop. I'm not though, so I am quite happy with the bargain price (compared to the Kindle DX).

Wow, simply WOW is all I can say.

As for heating up, it is negligible.

I have been using the thing for 4-5 hours at a time and while you can tell it is above room temperature, I don't think you would notice the fact unless you were asked the question.

I can't believe this thing actually exceeded MY expectations! Love the portability. The ease of using it at a coffee shop or anywhere else where lugging around a laptop or netbook seems so much of a pain now.

Battery life is awesome (10 hours seems about right, but I haven't run it down below 50% yet).

And this is awesome:

Idk, it still seems like a novelty gadget more than a real tool at this point. The inability to multi-task and play Flash are two major strikes against it, imo. As an e-reader that can do more than books, it's a winner. As a notebook, or netbook, replacement, it falls flat on its face.

Jobs has made no secret of his distaste for Adobe and its Flash plug-in, previously calling it "buggy," crash-prone, and a CPU hog. And a question-and-answer session after Thursday's iPhone OS 4.0 unveiling proved that his stance hasn't changed one iota.

During the brief Q&A, Sir Steve was only too happy to chat about Apple's new iAd advertising campaign and the "butterflies" in his stomach right before the iPad launch, and he even humored a reporter who asked about Apple's stance on distracted driving. But when it came to whether Apple had plans to add Flash support to the iPhone, he supplied a one-word answer: a "flat" no, according to Engadget.

Don't hold your breath for Flash on the iPhone, iPad - Yahoo! News

That said, it looks like they are holding out for HTML5, which should be pretty cool and will give Adobe a run for their money. Of course, it remains to be seen when it will be available and which video formats will be supported. And if big players like Youtube are not on board, then it really places the responsibility of content development with Apple. (according to the wiki, MP4 is not even a candidate for inclusion in HTML5's video tag)
