Becoming vegetarian 'can harm the environment'

Adopting a vegetarian diet based around meat substitutes such as tofu can cause more damage to the environment, according to a new study.

It has often been claimed that avoiding red meat is beneficial to the environment, because it lowers emissions and less land is used to produce alternatives.

But a study by Cranfield University, commissioned by WWF, the environmental group, found a substantial number of meat substitutes – such as soy, chickpeas and lentils – were more harmful to the environment because they were imported into Britain from overseas.

That's interesting indeed. Would not have thought that, obviously as someone said in the article it depends with what one replaces meat. And then if someone is not vegetarian forenvironmental reasons...

Maikeru, this is why I think that all people who are vegetarians becuase "the poor animals want to live too" should eat only what falls to the ground or everything...the wish (in the broad sense Iguess ;-)) to live is also present in plants...

I agree. The idea that somehow plants are less deserving or less evolved, and thus are more deserving to be dinner is stupid. When was the last time my pet plant took a crap on the carpet? Save plants, eat animals. :(
