yeah you may have installed grub on the boot partition, never realizing that its a boot loader and needs to live in the MBR or, or it installed with a reference to a device that doesnt exist, for example if the cdrom got initialized as hda1 and hard drive as hda2 and grub installed, but then when grub started loading the system saw hda1 as hard drive and hda2 as cdrom, grub would be very unhappy and wouldn't know where to load its files and error out big time on you...

 

Just noting that fstab has nothing to do with grub, but the fact that it too was messed up apparently, i think that something may have gone wrong with the install...
