Calcium Consumption May Cause Prostate Cancer in Chinese, Research Suggests

ScienceDaily (June 1, 2010) — Among Chinese men, calcium consumption -- even at relatively low levels and from non-dairy food sources such as soy, grains and green vegetables -- may increase prostate cancer risk, according to results published in Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

I have some concerns about this. Calcium absorption from vegetables depends quite a bit on the veggies. If veggies are rich in oxalic acid, and some common veggies and drinks like tea are, that can limit calcium absorption. Many mainland Chinese are also heavy smokers, and we should keep in mind that smoking increases the risk for a wide variety of cancers. I believe some suggested that dairy products were associated with a higher risk for cancer because of influence on IGF-1 and other growth hormones, although it depends on which kind of dairy product. Yoghurt and other fermented dairy products appear to reduce the risk of cancer and stimulate the immune system.
