Michaelangelica Posted June 12, 2010 Report Posted June 12, 2010 Christmas Island - unique environment under threathttp://www.abc.net.au/rn/scienceshow/stories/2010/2916490.htm Most people know Christmas Island as a place for refugees. Few people know it as a place of natural beauty, where a unique ecosystem of plants and animals has developed over millions of years. In just over 100 years 25% of the island's rainforest has been removed. Exotic species have run wild; vertebrates, reptiles and plants have gone extinct. Sharon Carleton visits Christmas Island and reports on efforts to protect what remains of this fragile environment. The transcript of this program will be available by Monday afternoonhttp://www.abc.net.au/rn/scienceshow/stories/2010/2916490.htm .Christmas Island - galleryA very enjoyable show on the ecology and environment an Island that is usually just thought of here as a gulag. http://sanchezjalapeno.com/christmas-island/ Didn't we have a thread on islands?I couldn't find it. Boerseun Posted June 13, 2010 Report Posted June 13, 2010 I have seen that very same picture of the robber crab on top of your post hugging the dustbin. I have posted it here on hypo somewhere. That bloody thing gave me nightmares. I kid you not... There's a thread for Obscure Islands, if that'll float your boat - but I think Christmas Island is awesome enough to justify it's own thread!
