Queso Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 i seem to watch a lot of stand-up comedy.all my life i've been taking things apart and figuring them out, and now as i grow older i realize i do it with more than just VCR's and legos, but people.stand-up comedians all have different ways of doing the same things. the good ones get the audience to relate, and feel what they are saying, to attract more attention and attachment. more laughs, more energy, more popularity. of course-but here's what gets me.daylight savings time.one stand up comedian could laugh and joke about how confusing it is, and the audience will roar and relate.another will laugh and joke about how stupid it is that people think it's so confusing. it's just an hour! how confusing can it be?! and that same audience will roar and relate and laugh. woohoo everybody's happy. how come the majority of people just agree with whatever people say?? :xx:i've noticed the ones who don't are either slightly smarter, or extremely more arrogant. of course this is all majority and observation....i'm confused again. sanctus Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 Well, many comedians I know are more left oriented, but if you look in the laughing audience there aren't only left people there but everybody laughs. Terefore laughing doesn't imply you agree, other example there are racist jokes but not all people who tell themm or laugh when hearing them are racist (I actually boycott those jokes it can have a bad influence, but that's another thread). I would easily state that about 80% of the human population is a follwer (i.e. a sheep: they don't think they follow) so it is not surprising that so many people laugh even if they don't agree. As Kant said :"it's so easy not think" where easy is to be understood as comfortable. To me it doesn't seem that the no-sheep-humans are smarter, because how do you define someone as smarter there is no absolute definition of smartness. And I'm not surprised at all hearing of theswe people being more arrogant, simply because you don't follow the mass it is very easy to become someone judged as arrogant and also because it needs courage to be different, if you are arrogant you believe more in yourself and are therefore more courageous. Queso Posted April 15, 2005 Author Report Posted April 15, 2005 i'll change the subject now by asking you if you're a fan of the pink floyd album "animals"?sheep, dogs, and pigs.a lot of critics say that animals was the downfall of pink floyd, but how could they say that when the wall came after it?? IDIOTS I SAY!the concept to animals was great though, and one thing that stands out the most to me, something i don't think anyone had done before, was on their song 'sheep.'during the chorus, his voice fades into a synth. PERFECT dynamics and harmonization, i get chills listening to that song. maybe some say it was the downfall of pink floyd because most of it was quite simple. pigs on the wing for example. just acoustic guitar and vocals. i love it though. Turtle Posted April 16, 2005 Report Posted April 16, 2005 Well now I must say that in the situation of comedian/audience that the comedian is the authority figure in the situation & therefore the audience responds appropriately by laughing. The occurance of nervous laughter reflects a knew jerk reaction to the authority figure in spite of the inappropriateness of what that authority communicates.___I realize my commnets are blue & not yellow & further not verbatim; I hope they are not useless however. :) Quote
sanctus Posted April 18, 2005 Report Posted April 18, 2005 Orbyscli (and this is my 600th post), I don't get the relation between my post and your answer, is it because i don't know pink Floyd well enough? Quote
Queso Posted April 18, 2005 Author Report Posted April 18, 2005 in a nutshell-pink floyd did an album called "animals" and it was based on dogs, sheep, and pigs. 3 kinds of humans.pigs being the authority, sheep being the followers or the ones pushed around, dogs being the enforcers...like parents. Rincewind Posted April 18, 2005 Report Posted April 18, 2005 I think that whether we agree with a comedian or not is irrelevant when we are listening to a good comedian. A good comedian's art is to present what we dismiss as ordinary or pedestrian and not worth examining from a different, and amusing, aspect; especially one we have not considered before. This can then help us to feel more relaxed about entertaining a contrary point of view to our own, and asking us to question our own views in a non-threatening way. Quote
C1ay Posted April 18, 2005 Report Posted April 18, 2005 I find I enjoy the entertainment industry much more if I avoid learning of the political orientation of the performers. Some of them are so opposite of my own position that I find myself preoccupied with their political position instead of enjoying the performance they give. I know that some are blatantly obvious and try to espouse their viewpoint in their acts but some don't and their acts are more entertaining if they are not viewed in some colored perspective. Quote

Queso Posted April 18, 2005 Author Report Posted April 18, 2005 Read Orwell's Animal Farm...will do, thanks.i agree with you c1ay, it is much better if they are vague-or don't even state it at all. even when i don't want it to, it can obscure how i feel about them. Quote
Turtle Posted April 18, 2005 Report Posted April 18, 2005 ___I just watched a piece on 60 Minutes about a growing cadre of Christian comedians. It wasn't funny. Quote
DFINITLYDISTRUBD Posted May 18, 2008 Report Posted May 18, 2008 Daylight savings time IS stupid and therefore funny! If we as humans were truly intelligent we'd set the clocks exactly one half hour between ahead and back an leave it! Saving the agrivation of adjusting sleeping habbits and the confusion of which clocks in your house are set to the right time...my bedroom clock automaticly sets itself but it does so on the wrong day at 2 am I forget the day off hand but this year it switched 4 days early!! how come the majority of people just agree with whatever people say?? i've noticed the ones who don't are either slightly smarter, or extremely more arrogant. of course this is all majority and observation 1. please like me2. I want to fit in3. I don't know4. I'm scared5. I don't want to cause troubleEtc.etc.etc. Quote
