How many U.S. dollars? How many Thai baht?

A lot of non-native users are confused by the following:

 

25 dollars

25 pounds

25 roubles

 

but

 

25 yen

25 baht

25 kip (Lao currency)

 

So why no plural 's' in the second group? I think I may have the answer, but would like to see if others have the same, or different explanation. What do you think?
