Queso Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 i'm a dreamer and someday if i'm rich i hope to buy a small island big enough for a small airstrip. now if this ever happens, could i establish my own government on the island, and call it a country?is there some kind of global bs rule where people can't do this? and let's just say i did establish a government, does this mean i could go to those big fancy meetings with a bunch of countries? would i even want to establish a government?....or just live on it and do whatever i want, living with a group of people who live by developing philosophy instead of physical documents? that actually sounds nicer. bumab Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 I think all the land in the world has been claimed by some country or other, so you'd have to buy it form them. Once you did... I suppose you could. Open up a ritzy hotel, pay taxes to yourself... Pretty nice retirement, I'll bet :) Quote
Queso Posted April 15, 2005 Author Report Posted April 15, 2005 any idea how many millions of dollars something like this would cost? Quote

Queso Posted April 15, 2005 Author Report Posted April 15, 2005 yeah but honestly...who wants to freeze to death? Quote
Fishteacher73 Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 Antarctica is wide open. I believe there is an international treaty that bans the colonization or exploitation of reasources on it though. Quote
bumab Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 There is a treaty, and the whole contenent is divyed up into zones of control, i thought. while no one technically owns it, it's still all spoken for by the international community, i think Quote
Fishteacher73 Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 I am sure that there are unclaimed atolls and whatnot in the Pacific. I guess there might be some stipulations in the UN charter that defines the requirements for a gov't. Perhaps some goggling is in order... Quote
Fishteacher73 Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 Acording to the UN Charter:Article 41. Membership in the United Nations is open to all other peace-loving states which accept the obligations contained in the present Charter and, in the judgment of the Organization, are able and willing to carry out these obligations. 2. The admission of any such state to membership in the United Nations will be effected by a decision of the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council. I guess you need at last a military and some friends on the Security Council. Quote
Queso Posted April 15, 2005 Author Report Posted April 15, 2005 just like sanctus's signature....who needs an army?? F that, i'm not having an army. no government for me Quote
sanctus Posted April 18, 2005 Report Posted April 18, 2005 I don't remeber who, but one of the big rock-musicians of the 60-70's has bought an island and banned everyone from entering it (himself as well) to make a natural environment without humans... Quote
sanctus Posted April 18, 2005 Report Posted April 18, 2005 Found something else herehttp://geography.about.com/library/weekly/aa081100a.htm and herehttp://www.sealandgov.com/index.html That should answer your question orbyscly Quote
Queso Posted April 18, 2005 Author Report Posted April 18, 2005 wow that stuff is awesome, thanks sanctus. i love how he fired warning shots at the boat and totally got away with it-that is great. :) Quote
Biochemist Posted April 18, 2005 Report Posted April 18, 2005 any idea how many millions of dollars something like this would cost? There are some islands in the US (like in the great lakes regions) that area as little as 10 Million. You would stil be a US taypayer/citizen/law abider, but the price is not so bad. Quote
Queso Posted April 18, 2005 Author Report Posted April 18, 2005 i'm sorry but i think that is completely absurd. Quote
