Fishteacher73 Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 I think just having a sub with some tactical nukes would get everyones attention and probably give us some breathing room :Alien: . Quote
rockytriton Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 Yea, I'd like to join the country too, but I say no government. Let's just have anarchy, but I want to be one of the people who rules the anarchy. Quote
Turtle Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 ___The sub idea is good too, but sans missles & nuclear power. Missles would make us a target right off the bat, plus they require regular maintenance/replacement as would the nuclear fuel.___The idea of cold fusion was broached in another thread, but of course we don't have it yet. What we do have is existing technology, including wind, solar, & wave action from which to generate electricity. We want as green & clean an island nation as possible.___Again to the law, we won't be claiming any ocean, only declaring the sovereignty of our floating island nation as we migrate like whales round our watery world. bumab Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 if we were an independent nation, wouldn't we "own" the 20 miles or so of waters surrounding us, as per international law? Quote
Fishteacher73 Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 We could all be ex-patriots, but I think there actually has to be land to claim water rights. So there would be no new nation. Quote
Buffy Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 if we were an independent nation, wouldn't we "own" the 20 miles or so of waters surrounding us, as per international law?No. You have to have "land" which is dirt/rock built up from the ocean floor. To have "official" land, it has to be above sea level for some minimum amont of time per day on average. You can't establish a claim to open ocean, since by treaty, international waters can't be claimed. Once you have land, you then control 15-miles out from the coastline as soverign territory, and you have certain economic resource rights out to 200 miles... Again however, no one can stop you from sailing the seven seas... Cheers,Buffy bumab 1 Quote
bumab Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 Fine with me! Just curious. I could imagine problems if you pulled into LA and claimed the bay in the name of "floating turtle island." wars have started over less :Alien: Quote
Turtle Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 ___Ah but we won't pull into any bay; we remain outside all territorial waters. We have our own bays wherein ships may dock, & carry on commerce as they would if docking on land. ___I think since what we propose has never been done, there may be no specific laws that apply. I suspect some nation or nations would see it as threat & take steps to stop it before it ever could be launched. Sshhshshsh... be verwy verwy qwiet.____Our first order of business may be to develop a secret code; where's Irish? :Alien: Quote
Fishteacher73 Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 ____Our first order of business may be to develop a secret code; where's Irish? :Alien: We could use propper english...its seem a bit obscure these days. Quote
Turtle Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 ___That's Ok for the country, but now that you mention it it is yet another government decision we must make, ie. an offical language.___But I refer to keeping plans secret etc, for which we need a code/encryption scheme. Good grief Orby! This government you planned is already embroiled with decisions. Help us decide oh Grand Poobah Orby! :Alien: ____Water World here we come! Quote
