Dear friends! Hypography is moving!

From around 1pm EST on Tuesday, August 17, Hypography will be closed. It may take a bit longer until the forums reopen, but we expect to be online within a few hours.

After the relaunch, our forums will be found at our ancient url: scienceforums.com. The move to Scienceforums.com is special because we were on that domain for years before we merged the old portal at Hypography.com with our forums. But now, over 10 years after Hypography.com was launched, our site is virtually all forums and not much else. Therefore we're splitting the two sites again. You will still find some content at hypography.com, but our main site will be at scienceforums.com.

We hope that nothing gets lost during the transition to our new platform. We may however lose something. Some features will be broken, while we gain others. We are not 100% sure that the LaTeX engine we are switching to will work, but we will find out. Some of our attachments and images may be gone, too. Now is a good time to go through your Private Messages and delete those you don't need, and save those you do. We can't guarantee that they will come with us.

But all posts and blog entries should be transfered over, as will your usernames and (hopefully) passwords!

But why...oh why are we moving?

The platform we've been on for years now is aging. It is vulnerable to hackers, as was shown last week when Google decided to blacklist us for distributing malware. We managed to plug that hole, but it's happened several times over the past year. We are being run over by spammers. We're also growing tired of using software which is buggy and needs constant maintenance. We hope that we can ease the burden of our volunteer staff by providing them with a better and more modern forum platform!

Moving to a new platform requires that many of us learn new things. We promise to try to help you as much as we can after the move. The Hypography Science Forums is volunteer work and as long as we all look out for each other and help as much as we can, our site will keep growing and we will all have a great time.

Please keep your fingers crossed that the server, platform and domain move goes smoothly!

We look forward to seeing you on the other side! :)
