Adelaide has had some rather hot days but the weather has been generally mild and pretty much all the nights have been cold :winter_brr: Can't put the trackies and jumpers (sweaters) away just yet... Apparently we had above average rainfall in November but we sure could use some more. Quote

Cedars Posted December 13, 2007 Report Posted December 13, 2007 While my immediate area received heavy rainfall, the drainage engineering used worked like a charm. On that note a bit, my neighborhhod (about 10 years old)is designed so storm drains feed fenced grassy swales which contain any excess and slowly release it to streams. The house gutters feed into a drain field setup rather than directly to the storm drains. Around here they have been pushing "rain gardens". Is that what your drain field setup is? Rain garden - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The wiki article mentions Maplewood MN so here's their site on the project:Maplewood -- Rainwater Gardens Quote
Turtle Posted December 25, 2007 Author Report Posted December 25, 2007 Around here they have been pushing "rain gardens". Is that what your drain field setup is? Rain garden - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The wiki article mentions Maplewood MN so here's their site on the project:Maplewood -- Rainwater Gardens That sounds like an apt description of the parts of the setup that have fencing, but I have not talked to anyone who really understands what it's for, let alone what terms the engineers use. All of the house gutters run to undergroud 4" pipe which terminates in a vertical 8" pipe about 12" from the surface. There is a removeable cap on the 8" pipe sticking up out of the yard, and there is a strainer basket like you see in swimming pool strainers; it is bleow the inlet and whether the basket is inteneded to come out or not, I can't budge it. About 20 feet away there is another 4" pipe stiking 18" up out of the ground and it has perforations. I have no idea what other plumbing is connected to these below. Speaking of words ending in 'ow', for at least a short time Santa gave me the white Christmas I wrote him about. ;);) YouTube - White Christmas http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoJzWMAyBiE Quote

In the land of Oz (specifically Adelaide), the forecast for this last day of 2007 is 43o C, approx 109o F. So of course it's damn hot! But then this is the Australian summer. :winter_brr: The past couple of days have been 40o C and there's more hot weather to come. At least it's a dry heat - hot and humid is far worse. I'm looking forward to Sunday when the forecast is a mild 29o C! Quote

Expect delivery about August. ;) At the risk of double posting, I put this weather video in the Clouds thread, but it belongs here just as well. Mountains make their own little micro-climate, and you can see some of these effects in this video. (1 hour 20 minutes compressed to 4 minutes) The little wisp coming from the top is likely blowing snow, but, this is a volcano and does emit steam from time to time so I'm not sure which it is. Well, enough words; the film justifies itself. Enjoy. ;)PS Watch the left lower slope toward the end of the movie to see snow blowing up-slope. YouTube - Mt. It lasted for about 2 minutes. :DThen came the howls of fire-trucks. I wondered WTF!? I was fairly close to it without realizing. It passed me. luckily no one was hurt, and my power stayed on. Very odd. :D:D Quote
