Strange Object Found On Forest Walk.

Recommended Posts

This object was small, but not tiny, clinging to a branch in a forest in Southern Spain.

Could this be a wasp's nest?

Thank you!

I'd have to have some information at least before I could say anything, do you have a picture? Was it paper like, spherical? Flat?

Could be a cocoon. <_<

Just a thought, but wouldn't a walk through the forest be a good time to carry your camera? ;)

i can't quite id the plant, but the object is possibly a gall. they are indeed a form of wasp 'nest', and there are varieties in Spain that form on Oaks. here's a page with photos & descriptions from Europe.

Gall Wasps

these are tiny wasps that lay their eggs under the bark or into leaves. the exact mechanism is still unknown, but the larvae cause the plant to grow the gall & then the larvae feast inside. when mature, they chew a hole through the gall and fly off. :fly:

thanks, the wasp galls you refer to , we also saw them on our walk.

I would like to post a picture of it, but can't do so because of this "500 k" global upload limit on this site.

What am I supposed to do? It seems a very small limit for files.

nice work mintaka! :thumbs_up very enjoyable. :)

i have several options for your images. besides attaching images, you can upload them to our Gallery & then insert them in posts using %5B/img%5D%20tags.%20it%20may%20still%20be%20the%20case%20that%20there%20is%20a%20size%20limit,%20though%20i

here is a tutorial on using the Gallery: Gallery Tutorial

if there is a too-small limit for you there, i'd suggest writing a note to one of the Administrators and making a request to have your limit raised. other than that, you can always upload your images to a third-party site like Photobucket and then paste image url's into your posts & use the ' alt='>if there is a too-small limit for you there, i'd suggest writing a note to one of the Administrators and making a request to have your limit raised. other than that, you can always upload your images to a third-party site like Photobucket and then paste image url's into your posts & use the '> tags to get them to display.

hope this helps. :turtle:

Your picture looks like a Praying mantis egg case, I'm almost certain that is what it is.

Yay!! :D

I'm so happy that we found one. We know they are around here, and have seen them often.

These are really interesting little critters, and great to think that each one of these little egg cases will produce up to 200 babies! ( i guess babies is the wrong word, but hey...B)

Really cool....thanks again! Made my day this...:D

Thanks Turtle!

Glad you liked it, and thanks all for the help, it's so great to have a place where people can answer questions....:D

I have a lesson now, but will work out the image posting thing later this evening, thanks loads for your instructions...

I think a 3rd party thing might be the best idea, at least conserve this site's server space a bit ....

Thanks again! :)
