BoD Posted June 14, 2011 Report Posted June 14, 2011 I've been searching the web for a few days for answers and have only found conflicting ones. These rocks are not a common find around my home. They appear to have rust on them. I have put a magnet(although a weak one)on them and they dont appear to be magnetic. Maybe a stronger magnet would prove otherwise. The reason I believe these to be extraordinary rocks is because of the location found. These were found near a large crater near my home approximately 2 acres across. There are litteraly thousands of them strewn about the area. Any answers would be great! Thanks in advance. BoD Quote

BoD looks like hematite to me, an iron-rich terrestrial rock which does sometimes form as spherules. hematite @ wiki can you tell us more about the location? Quote

Turtle Posted June 14, 2011 Report Posted June 14, 2011 I live In Del Rio Tx. I'm trying to get you a picture of the crater from google maps. I can see it but I can t save it. do you mean Google Earth? i'm looking around now & see anumber of circular formations. anyway, to get the image from google earth, click File, then Save, then Save Image. make sure you're at the zoom level you want. if you're not on Google Earth & if you have image software you can look for a Screen Capture function under the File menu. i see one circular feature is a park of some kind? west of town about 75 miles & labled Cima Cerro el Colorado. investigating. edit:  that's in Mexico. for what it's worth, i do think the rocks are hematite. a local college or university with a geology lab might have a look at it for you. off to fly over your town. Turtle Posted June 14, 2011 Report Posted June 14, 2011 here's some usgs data on rock types in the county. i don't see hematite right off, but it can precipitate out of water & accululate on lake bottoms & you seem to have a lot clay & limestone there. Geologic Units in Val Verde County Quote
